The last couple of years have been tough for Jessica Drew, Marvel’s Spider-Woman, as she’s faced difficult experiences both in her past and present. Things are about to get even harder, though, as Marvel has announced a shocking development that will lead Spider-Woman into her most challenging time yet, starting later this year.
This September, Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, returns to her mysterious roots in a special 50th-anniversary issue (#1). Writer Dan Watters (known for his work on Loki) and artist Andrea Broccardo (Spider-Man Noir) are teaming up to tell a story that will dramatically change things for longtime fans. Plus, a shocking twist in Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity will send Spider-Woman on a dangerous journey through the darkest parts of the Marvel Universe.
Writer Ann Nocenti, known for her work on Daredevil, teams up with artist Stefano Raffaele (Alien vs. Captain America) to bring a new detective story featuring Jessica to Los Angeles. She’ll investigate leads and confront a long-time foe called Flying Tiger. The 50th Anniversary Special will be available in comic shops starting September 2, 2026.
What We Know About Spider-Woman’s 50th Anniversary Special (And What We Hope To See)
The Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special will present two stories that both focus on Jessica Drew’s skills as a detective and explore the grittier side of the Marvel Universe. Jessica has always been willing to tackle tough, dangerous cases, and these stories will continue that tradition.
Watters is a big fan of the character and thrilled to begin a fresh storyline for her. He describes Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, as ‘mysterious and dangerous’ and one of his favorite Marvel heroes, adding that he’s excited to show her using her venom blasts in this new chapter.
Nocenti is thrilled to be writing Spider-Woman again, particularly because the story allows for detective work. She explained that everyone has weaknesses, and it’s inspiring to see characters grow beyond them. When asked to contribute to the celebration of Spider-Woman’s 50th anniversary by editor Kaeden McGahey, Nocenti focused on how Jessica Drew’s unique spider pheromones could create a sense of isolation. This presented an interesting challenge for Jessica as a detective – solving mysteries while unintentionally making people uncomfortable – and also resonated with a common feeling: everyone feels disliked sometimes.”
Writer Ann Nocenti explained that in the 1980s, editor Mark Gruenwald asked her to finish the Spider-Woman comic book with issue #50, effectively ending the series. Returning to write about Jessica Drew and her difficult journey with friendships and fighting feels like a satisfying return, she said. Plus, the artwork by Stefano Raffaele promises to be beautiful!
We’re hoping the 50th Anniversary Special will revisit Jessica’s story – it’s been a while since she actively searched for her son, Gerry. He was kidnapped by Hydra, rapidly aged, and ultimately became the villain known as Green Mamba.
Roger has left before, and the once quirky and endearing family he was a part of has now fallen apart. His story felt unfinished, so if he won’t be involved in Jessica Drew’s adventures anymore, it deserves a real conclusion – hopefully we’ll get that when the Spider-Woman special comes out later this year.
