Mass Effect Fans Can’t Miss This Promising Sci-Fi RPG

With the future of the Mass Effect series uncertain, fans of big sci-fi role-playing games don’t have many new titles to anticipate in 2026. But a team of former BioWare developers is working on a promising new space opera that feels very similar to Mass Effect. This project offers strategic combat and extensive exploration, and it could be exactly what Mass Effect fans are hoping for.

Archetype Entertainment, a studio focused on creating immersive story-driven role-playing games, is partnering with Wizards of the Coast – the creators of Dungeons & Dragons – on a new project. This collaboration between two teams known for strong storytelling is exciting news for players who love engaging and well-written adventures.

Exodus Offers A First Look At Third-Person Action Through Initial Gameplay Footage

A new trailer for the sci-fi RPG Exodus recently revealed gameplay footage, focusing on combat and exploration. The trailer showed a typical fight scene with the main character and two companions battling various enemies. The combat style is similar to Mass Effect, using an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective reminiscent of Commander Shepard’s battles.

At the start of the battle, the player was protected by cover and could scout the area a few times. They could also give basic orders to their AI teammates and keep track of their own health, skills, and weapon ammo. The player quickly launched a missile strike against a group of enemies, then, with help from their allies, destroyed a shielded drone.

The trailer highlighted fast-paced combat with quick weapon changes and powerful headshots. Though we didn’t see the end of the fight, the diverse skills on display hint at a flexible and customizable combat system. The trailer ended with the main character exploring a beautiful, ancient ruin floating high above a planet, called the Celestial Shrine. They used a tool called the Railclaw to overcome difficult terrain, suggesting that tools will be key to exploring the game’s different environments.

Mass Effect Inspirations Are Clear Through Exodus’ Development Team

The sci-fi game Exodus is set 40,000 years in the future and establishes its world through conflict. However, it borrows heavily from games like Mass Effect and others in the genre. The development team includes creators who previously worked on major RPGs such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, with many being experienced veterans of the well-known studio Bioware.

The game’s combat feels a lot like Mass Effect, letting you command teammates and use abilities to gain an edge in fights. While we haven’t seen much yet, it seems other systems might be just as detailed, building on your relationships with companions to make them stronger in battle. Exodus also features more involved exploration, letting you investigate interesting planets and locations throughout the galaxy, adding an action-adventure element to the experience.

Promises Of Larger Sci-Fi Exploration & RPG Mechanics Could Create Something Great

Previous Mass Effect games had some weaknesses, but Exodus seems poised to overcome them and be even better. It looks like Exodus will feature the kind of companion system that lets you build strong relationships with your allies – something fans loved in Mass Effect. And Exodus might improve on this by adding combat advantages based on those relationships.

Similar to a futuristic take on Baldur’s Gate 3, Exodus promises to offer a deep RPG experience, building on the exploration and combat shown in its first gameplay reveal. The game’s large worlds could be enhanced by extensive character customization, including classes for both the player and their companions. The developers are confident in delivering a compelling story, which would lead to engaging characters, side quests, and a rich game world.

Even though we’ve only seen a little of this game so far, the art style and combat look really promising. If the developers aim high, Exodus could build on what made games like Mass Effect so good, potentially becoming the refined experience fans have been hoping for.
