The popular game series Mass Effect has consistently faced changes from those in charge, both with its video games and now with the upcoming Amazon TV show. Announced in 2024, the series has been in development for some time, but Peter Friedlander, the new head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, has apparently requested a complete overhaul of the script.
According to The Ankler, the Mass Effect TV series is reportedly very close to getting the green light. However, sources say showrunner Drew Friedlander is focusing on changes to make the series more accessible to viewers who haven’t played the games.
It’s unclear exactly what he’s aiming for, but it seems he wants to prioritize strong characters and a compelling plot that would work well on television, rather than relying heavily on details from the games. He might also be making some changes to the story to appeal to a broader audience of science fiction fans.
There’s a risk the show might leave out what makes Mass Effect special, potentially disappointing longtime fans and failing to attract new ones. Only time will tell if it succeeds, but the producers might be aiming for a similar hit like Amazon’s Fallout series, which drew 83 million viewers for its second season around 91 days after it premiered.
