Masters of the Universe Confirms a Major Character Won’t Appear in Reboot (And How They Decided)

The upcoming Masters of the Universe movie will bring together many of the beloved heroes and villains from Eternia, boasting a strong lineup including Skeletor, He-Man, Teela, Evil-Lyn, Beast Man, Ram Man, Fisto, and Trap Jaw. However, despite this large cast, some popular characters won’t make an appearance, including one that director Travis Knight personally likes. In an interview with ComicBook, Knight explained the reasoning behind these choices and how the final cast was selected.

The movie features many classic villains like Beast Man, Trap Jaw, and Tri-Klops, but Mer-Man isn’t one of them. Director Knight explained he tried to include Mer-Man, but couldn’t find a way to make it work. As a fun Easter egg, though, the prosthetics team created a background character who looks just like Mer-Man. Knight says fans who look closely will spot a few similar hidden details throughout the film, even if those characters couldn’t be fully integrated into the story.

Travis Knight Reveals How He Decided On Which Characters To Use In Masters of the Universe

With a franchise as long-running as Masters of the Universe, there are plenty of characters to pick from. When asked how Knight decided which characters to include in the movie, he confessed that being a fan himself actually made the decision harder.

Knight explained that filmmaking is an art form defined by time. Because you have a limited amount of time to tell a story, it needs to be tightly focused. The entire film should be built around a clear point of view and the emotions it aims to evoke.

Knight explained that because the story truly centered on Adam, everything else had to support his journey. This allowed for more developed and complex supporting characters. However, he realized adding too many characters ultimately limited what could be done with each of them. He admitted he’d become overly enthusiastic as a fan rather than focusing on what was best for the film. But he also emphasized the richness of the universe and its characters, noting over 40 years of established history and mythology.

We’ve only begun to explore the possibilities of what can be done, and I was really happy to include some of my personal favorites – Ram Man, Fisto, and Mekaneck – in the project,” Knight explained.

Mer-Man isn’t the only familiar face missing from the new series; the heroes are also lacking Orko. However, as producer Rob Knight explained, adding too many characters would limit everyone’s screen time. The plan is to introduce characters like Mer-Man and Orko in a potential sequel if the first film does well, giving them the spotlight they deserve.

Masters of the Universe is set to hit theaters on June 5th, 2026.
