By the power of Grayskull we have a live actionfilm!
Following the popular 1980s cartoon, a disappointing 1987 movie, and a couple of recent animated Netflix series, a new live-action Masters of the Universe film has arrived. The movie begins with a long introduction showing young Adam in the land of Eternia. His father, the King, along with his mother and protector Duncan (played by Idris Elba), fight against the villain Skeletor, who has a strikingly gaunt appearance. When Skeletor’s forces overwhelm them, young Adam is entrusted with a magical sword and escapes through a wormhole. He loses the sword during his journey and ends up on Earth, where he grows up to become the actor Nicholas Galitzine.
He knows he’s not from Earth, and he’s upset about losing the sword he needs to win back his father’s kingdom and Castle Grayskull, which Skeletor has taken over. A mysterious clue from a comic book shop leads him to the sword and a path back to Eternia, joining forces with the space warrior Teela (Camila Mendes) to recapture Grayskull. Meanwhile, Skeletor desperately wants the sword, believing it will grant him unlimited power.
Behind those Masters of the Universe…
The newest film version is a big-budget production that moved between several studios before ending up at Amazon, who invested heavily in it. For the writers – Chris Butler, Aaron & Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham – all longtime fans of the series, working on this film was a dream come true. They cleverly recognize the inherent silliness of the source material and playfully embrace it with knowing jokes. Considering characters are named Trap Jaw, Ram Man, and even Fisto, it’s surprising this was ever aimed at children! The writers included a subtle joke about Fisto that will likely go over kids’ heads but elicit a chuckle from dads. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, even going so far as to parody the original animated series – particularly in a scene after the major battle where the heroes share a hearty, exaggerated laugh.
While Galitzine clearly enjoys playing the part, the character is meant to be incredibly muscular, leading some to expect a physique similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s. Given Jared Leto’s recent box office failures with films like Tron: Ares and Morbius, it’s perhaps not surprising he’s kept hidden behind the Skeletor mask. This makes some viewers question whether Mark Hamill, who previously voiced the character, might have been a better choice.
The movie is quite long, exceeding two hours, and while it has some action, it might not keep younger viewers engaged. While dedicated fans of the original series will likely enjoy it, the film seems geared specifically towards them, and its high budget doesn’t broaden its appeal to a wider audience.
