Matt Damon addresses future of Bourne movies amid reboot reports

Matt Damon says he’s still interested in starring in future Bourne movies, despite ongoing uncertainty about the franchise’s direction.

The actor, known for his role as Jason Bourne—the amnesiac assassin he first portrayed in the 2002 film The Bourne Identity—recently told Parade that he hasn’t ruled out returning to the character, and discussions about it are still possible.

Damon mentioned they’re eager to work on a similar project again, as they and the entire team thoroughly enjoyed the previous one.

Matt Damon has starred as Jason Bourne in four movies: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, and the 2016 film Jason Bourne. Jeremy Renner played a different character, Aaron Cross, in the 2012 spin-off The Bourne Legacy.

Matt Damon recently spoke about this after The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the rights to the Jason Bourne movies, and all of Robert Ludlum’s books, are being offered to potential buyers by WME, representing the author’s estate.

I remember reading that the studio was hoping to keep the Bourne movies going and even get them made more often! The report said they were looking for a new place to set the stories, but it was still up in the air whether Matt Damon would be back for any future films. They weren’t making any promises just yet.

Several companies, including Skydance, Apple, and Netflix, reportedly held discussions with the rights holders. Universal Pictures, which previously made the Bourne movies, was also considered a possible buyer.

The series took yet another unexpected direction when NBCUniversal regained the rights to both the Bourne and Treadstone storylines, opening up possibilities for new movies and shows inspired by Robert Ludlum’s novels.

The latest Bourne movie brought Matt Damon back together with director Paul Greengrass, who also directed the previous films, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

It’s still uncertain if Matt Damon will return for another film, if a new actor will take over the role, or if the series will go in a different direction. However, Damon hasn’t dismissed any of those possibilities.

For now, though, Bourne fans may need to start workshopping ideas…
