Strangers Author Belle Burden Teases Upcoming Gwyneth Paltrow Movie

Belle Burden has the goop scoop about Gwyneth Paltrow’s newest role.

Only three months after the release of Burden’s memoir, Strangers, it was announced that Netflix would be adapting it into a series. Gwyneth Paltrow is set to star as Burden, portraying the author and her experience with a broken twenty-year marriage and subsequent heartbreak – something Burden herself is still trying to process.

Speaking to TopMob News at an Amazon Books event on June 10th, the author described a colleague as ‘wonderful,’ having met both in person and via Zoom. She explained that this person truly understood and connected with her book on an emotional level, and she’s confident they will treat it well.

Gwyneth Paltrow is aware that her new film, Strangers, is her first starring role in over ten years—since 2010’s Country Strong.

Burden shared their enthusiasm for the actress’s return to acting, recalling how fantastic they thought she was in Marty Supreme. They expressed genuine excitement about her taking on the role and admitted it felt surreal – a true honor – that she would be portraying them.

This whole experience with her album, Strangers, has been incredibly fast-paced for the 56-year-old – and surprisingly so, as she’d originally hoped for a low-key release. She never imagined, for example, that she’d be sharing the details of her difficult breakup in a 2023 essay for The New York Times’ Modern Love column.

Burden remembered that after the piece was published, two editors told him it could be expanded into a book. However, a close friend questioned the idea, suggesting, ‘Isn’t the ‘Modern Love’ piece enough? Are you sure you want to pursue this further?’

She explained that she decided to write a book because she felt she had a lot more to share. She said she knew right then and there that she wanted to create a complete, in-depth account of her experiences.

And the timing ended up being kismet for the mom of three.

She felt she began writing at the perfect time – far enough removed to gain perspective, but still close enough to vividly recall the emotions and details of that period.

Burden not only mastered the technical aspects of writing – like plot, suspense, and character development – but also discovered a way to express her personal story authentically, without being influenced by external opinions.

She said the biggest challenge was writing freely, without worrying about how people – especially those portrayed in the book – would react. She focused on letting go of that fear and, while the process was emotionally draining, she ultimately found it rewarding.

For the past six years, since her husband – referred to as “James” in the book but actually Henry Davis – unexpectedly told her he wanted a divorce at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Burden has processed the painful experience and gained a sense of peace and understanding.

She described the experience as incredibly painful, admitting she deeply desired a stable family life with her husband. Surprisingly, though, she expressed gratitude for what happened, saying it ultimately led her to where she is today.

Burden explained that going through a difficult time ultimately helped her rediscover her passion for writing and regain control of her life. She feels financially independent and much more confident and strong than she ever thought possible, and she’s thankful for the experience.

I’ve always loved what she said – it sounds like a cliché, but it really resonates with me. She believed, and I do too, that things often need to completely fall apart before you can build something truly new and amazing. It’s a powerful idea that’s stuck with me.

Burden was thrilled to learn her book landed at number four on Amazon’s Best Books of the Year (So Far) list. She shared that it’s incredibly rewarding to connect with readers globally who find pieces of themselves within the story. Being recognized alongside such talented authors on the list is a true honor, she said.

The incredible popularity of her memoir is especially meaningful to Burden, who was concerned readers might find it lacking in some way.

She admitted she never really found a clear explanation for what happened. Her ex-husband didn’t offer one either, and that used to worry her. Now, she realizes that ambiguity is actually relatable. She believes many people connect with the story because, in life – especially with relationships and friendships – we often don’t get a definitive reason when things fall apart, and that feeling is something people understand.
