Nick Cave, the author of ‘The Death of Bunny Munro,’ has discussed a key alteration made for the Sky adaptation of his novel – a change centered around how attractive the lead actor, Matt Smith, is portrayed.
This six-episode series centers on Bunny Munro (played by Smith), a traveling salesman, and his son, Bunny Jr. (Rafael Mathé), as they journey across the southern coast of England.
A family tragedy brings a father and son together for a meaningful trip – the most time they’ve spent together in years. During this journey, the son grapples with a big decision: should he continue his father’s legacy, or forge his own way in life?
The series, inspired by a novel from acclaimed musician Nick Cave, delves into the damaging characteristics of his father, Bunny Sr. It explores his reckless approach to parenting, as well as struggles with sex, drugs, and alcohol.
At a London Literature Festival event, Nick Cave explained that Johnny Flynn, who plays Bunny, brings a certain appeal to the character’s wild actions. Cave noted that Flynn is more captivating than they originally imagined for the role.
Things have really evolved,” Cave started. “In the original book, the character Bunny is quite unpleasant. He’s not physically appealing, and isn’t even good in bed. He’s basically a loser who constantly tries to take advantage of people, but mostly fails.
It wasn’t quite as awkward as it might have been with Matt in the role, because he naturally has a very charismatic and attractive presence – you could even say he’s effortlessly charming.
Cave explained that this version of the story is bolder because the women are actually drawn to the character, despite it being obvious what he’s doing. They’re captivated by his charm, even knowing better.
Despite the change, the lead singer of The Bad Seeds wasn’t upset at all. In fact, he felt it made things even more unsettling and happily complimented everyone who contributed.
Cave worked on the music for the film The Death of Bunny Munro, collaborating once again with Warren Ellis, a longtime friend and bandmate from The Bad Seeds.
The Death of Bunny Munro premieres on Sky Atlantic and NOW on Thursday 20th November 2025.
