Season 2 of Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again will feature a major showdown between Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil (Charlie Cox), and Mayor Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), as they battle for control of New York City. While Daredevil is expected to team up with heroes like Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Swordsman (Tony Dalton), along with some new allies, the season will also introduce some mysterious new characters.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again will bring back some familiar faces, including Lili Taylor (known from The Conjuring) as New York Governor Marge McCaffrey, and Matthew Lillard (of Scream fame) as a character named Mr. Charles. Lillard’s role is described as someone influential who starts to cause problems for the Kingpin in the worlds of politics and international relations, but this description feels unclear for a character played by such a well-known actor within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This raises the question: who exactly is Mr. Charles?
Matthew Lillard Teases His New Daredevil: Born Again Character
Currently, Mr. Charles appears to be a completely new character created for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, similar to Agent Phil Coulson. Chris Killian from ComicBook recently spoke with Matthew Lillard while promoting Macabre Spirits’ Ghost Face Vodka (released February 9th). We wanted to know if Lillard felt pressure creating a beloved MCU character from the ground up.
Honestly, it didn’t matter to me,” Lillard said. “Where he’s coming from or how he approaches the game is irrelevant. I’d be thrilled to play a well-known and beloved character, whether it’s in the Marvel or DC universe.
It’s really rewarding to play a character like William Afton from Five Nights at Freddy’s because of the established history and what fans expect. It’s the same reason I’d enjoy playing Shaggy from the Scooby Doo movies – you’re taking on a role with a built-in backstory and a passionate fanbase. That adds to the fun as an actor. But if a role doesn’t have that existing foundation, that’s okay too, because you get to create it yourself.
Some viewers doubt the true identity of “Mr. Charles.” The Marvel Cinematic Universe features several powerful global organizations who might challenge Wilson Fisk’s control of New York City. Mr. Charles could be working for a company like Roxxon, or he could be connected to both the business world and criminal/mystical groups as a front for The Hand. This last idea is intriguing, as the Defenders series on Netflix showed The Hand has a network of powerful international allies and a five-member leadership structure. There’s talk that the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again season might continue the story from The Defenders, with The Hand again targeting NYC. Could Mr. Charles be setting the stage for their return?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe and the old Marvel Netflix shows often cast well-known actors in small parts or roles that are exactly as expected. However, with Matthew Lillard returning as his character in Scream 7 after decades, it would be disappointing if his Daredevil: Born Again role wasn’t more surprising and complex.
Season two arrives on Disney+ beginning March 24th. You can now find Ghost Face Vodka in stores. Do you have any thoughts about Lillard’s character? Share them with us on the ComicBook Forum!
