Matthew Modine, known for his role in Stranger Things, is now joining the Monsterverse with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. He doesn’t see this as a big shift in his career, and for good reason. Modine plays Dr. Martin Brenner in the Netflix series, the driven and often harsh scientist in charge of Hawkins National Laboratory, who is responsible for Eleven’s abilities and, unintentionally, for opening the door between our world and the Upside Down.
Ray Modine will appear in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, scheduled for release in Spring 2025. Filming began a month later and took place in multiple locations around the globe, including Queensland, Utah, Mexico, Mumbai, and England. The movie is anticipated to continue the story from Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire, featuring the Titans battling a new, powerful enemy. Details about the plot and Modine’s character are currently being kept confidential, though it’s known he will play a military general.
During a recent interview with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant about the Stranger Things: Catalyst VR Experience, actor David Modine discussed joining the Monsterverse with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. He described his experience with the Legendary franchise as “so cool,” but ultimately felt both it and Netflix’s Stranger Things share a common goal: to entertain viewers.
Whether a film costs a little or a lot, it’s always about telling a compelling story. It’s about creating an experience for viewers – transporting them to new worlds, presenting challenges, and exploring universal themes like love, friendship, and overcoming obstacles. These stories can connect us to each other, helping us recognize our common values and shared humanity. It’s a truly rewarding profession!
Over the past decade, the Monsterverse—starting with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla in 2014—has tried to stand out from typical monster movies by frequently giving its human characters significant storylines. While the action and visual effects have consistently been praised, this approach hasn’t always resonated with critics or audiences, and hasn’t always been enough to outweigh their concerns.
I’ve been really impressed with how the Monsterverse has been handling its human stories lately. It felt like a weak spot for a while, but shows like Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters – which really focused on the people involved – forced them to get better. While the last couple of Godzilla and Kong team-up movies weren’t perfect in that area, I definitely think they’ve found a better balance between the awesome monster action and the human characters’ stories, and people are starting to notice!
Modine’s positive comments are good news for fans excited about how Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will develop the Monsterverse. Stranger Things is famous for blending exciting stories with heartfelt characters, and if Modine—a Golden Globe nominee—believes the new 2027 film achieves that same quality, it has the potential to be even more successful than Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
