DC Comics’ recent Absolute Batman run is generating a lot of buzz, particularly issue fourteen. This issue features a dramatically oversized Bruce Wayne battling an equally massive Bane. Many anime fans have pointed out striking similarities between the epic confrontation and a classic anime film, Akira. While it may be unintentional, writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta appear to have created a fight scene heavily inspired by the iconic anime.
Please be aware that this discussion contains spoilers for Absolute Batman Issue Fourteen. A clear connection exists between the DC comic and the anime film Akira, specifically regarding Bane’s immense size. Like Tetsuo Shima in Akira, Bane’s growth becomes uncontrollable. Many expected Batman to use the strength-enhancing drug Venom on himself, but instead, he surprisingly injects Bane with an even larger dose.
The newest issue features a recurring discussion between Batman and Alfred about how much stronger Bane can become using Venom. During their fight, Bane grows to an enormous size, becoming more like a giant than a typical DC villain. But when Batman injects even more Venom into him, Bane loses control, and his body begins to fail. This leads to a dramatic defeat – reminiscent of the anime film Akira – as Bane’s body can’t handle the overwhelming amount of Venom. Though Bane is defeated, the Joker remains a threat.
Has anyone seen the movie Akira – specifically, either Ssnyder1835 or Nick Dragotta? (I’m really enjoying this issue of Absolute Batman!) #Batman #DCComics

Bane x Akira: A Match Made in Heaven
Adding to the similarities with the film Akira, Absolute Batman’s final battle with Bane also happens in a sports arena. Fortunately, this fight doesn’t cause as much destruction as the one in Akira. Surprisingly, even after being severely injured, Bane doesn’t die. Instead, the Joker’s men collect what’s left of him. In a disturbing turn of events, the Joker then destroys the island where Bane was being held, wiping out both the rebel group, Cielos Libres, who were important to Bane, and what remained of the villain himself. With Bane now reduced to just a brain and eyes, it will likely be a long time before he returns.
