Just a heads-up – if you haven’t watched the first two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord yet, be careful, because I’m about to talk about some major plot points! I was really excited to learn that the series introduces a couple of Jedi who actually made it through Order 66, and even more surprisingly, one of them is from a species we’ve never seen before in Star Wars – it’s now officially part of the canon!
Following the events of Order 66, Jedi Padawan Devon Izara and Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki have found refuge on the previously untouched planet of Janix. However, they clash over how to move forward: Devon is willing to resort to theft for survival, while Master Daki believes in upholding his principles and relying on the kindness of others. Their differing approaches lead to further complications when Devon is arrested for stealing, only to be unexpectedly released from prison by Maul.
So, I was reading the official breakdown of that recent Star Wars episode, and it turns out Master Daki is part of a completely new species! They’re called the Mosyk, and we’ve never seen them in Star Wars before. It’s funny, during the making of the animated series, everyone just called him “Dino Jedi” before they actually came up with a name for him or his people.
Now that the Mosyk species has been officially added to the Star Wars universe through Master Daki, we might see other members of their kind appear in future Star Wars projects like Maul – Shadow Lord, or in TV shows, movies, books, comics, stories, or video games. Introducing a new alien species always opens the door for them to play a larger part in the story. The Twi’leks are a great example of this – they first appeared (though unnamed) in 1983’s Return of the Jedi as Bib Fortuna and Oola at Jabba the Hutt’s palace. Since then, Twi’leks have become increasingly important, with characters like Devon and the key figure Hera Syndulla from Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka.
Although the introduction of Mosyk to the Star Wars universe is mostly a fun detail within the Maul – Shadow Lord story, Master Daki remains a key character. He’s focused on rescuing Devon from Maul and uses his Force abilities to help others whenever possible, like when he saved people from a collapsing bridge on Janix. Daki continues to teach Devon the ways of the Jedi, while Maul tries to turn her to the dark side.
With Maul as the central character, his relentless pursuit of Devon as an apprentice, and hints of Inquisitors arriving on Janix, Master Daki’s situation appears dire. However, the show has been renewed for a second season, and Daki could still play a role in future storylines, particularly if Devon decides to leave Maul and reconnect with the Jedi Order.
Besides Maul, Devon, and Master Daki, important characters in Maul – Shadow Lord also include Brander Lawson (played by Wagner Moura), Two-Boots (Richard Ayoade), Rook Kast (Vanessa Marshall), Spybot (David W. Collins), Looti Vario (Chris Diamantopoulos), Rylee Lawson (Charlie Bushnell), Chief Klyce (Keiko Agena), and Rheena-Sul (Pamela Adlon).
