Maury Povich Says Connie Chung Made “10 Times” At Start of Marriage

That’s how things were when he and his wife, Connie Chung, first got together. The TV personality recently revealed some details about their finances shortly after they married in 1984.

During an interview with Interview magazine published on April 1st, Maury responded with a simple “Absolutely” after Adam Friedland playfully called him a “gold digger.”

Let me tell you, when my husband and I tied the knot, the tables were definitely turned! He was earning ten times more than I was at the time, and honestly, it was a bit of a fun dynamic. He likes to joke about it still, always asking, ‘How’s that working out for you?’ It just goes to show, success looks different for everyone, and a little humor can go a long way in any relationship.

By 1984, Connie Chung was well-known for her reporting on the CBS Evening News and had moved into anchoring roles with NBC News at Sunrise and the weekend NBC Nightly News. Meanwhile, Maury Povich gained fame in 1991 with his own talk show, which continued for over three decades until 2022.

At 87 years old, Maury says his happiest moments are thanks to his wife, Connie Chung, declaring he has a wonderful life simply because he married her.

The couple, who are parents to 30-year-old Matthew Jay Povich, have discovered a wonderful life for themselves in the Western United States.

He travels to New York for his podcast work, but otherwise spends about four and a half months each year in Montana, where he’s lived for nearly three decades.

We live close to Glacier National Park, roughly 40 miles from the Canadian border. It feels pretty secluded – we’re on our own little mountain, which is exactly how I like it.

Maury and Connie generally agree on things in their relationship, though it’s not without its challenges. They share daughters Susan Anne Povich, 62, and Amy Joyce Povich, 58, with Maury’s ex-wife, Phyllis Minkoff. Despite any difficulties, they both feel the effort they put into their relationship is worthwhile.

He explained in an April 2025 interview on Today that having a spouse in the same line of work can create a lot more empathy and understanding, which is a big benefit.

Seventy-nine-year-old Connie says her husband and son were her greatest sources of support throughout her remarkable, though often challenging, career.

Looking back, she told USA Today in October 2024 that she felt fortunate to have had two important men in her life, Maury and Matthew. She explained that their love was reciprocal and that no job could offer the same kind of emotional fulfillment.
