The third book in Mona Kasten’s Maxton Hall series, Save Us, revealed if Mortimer had altered Cordelia Beaufort’s will, and this discovery dramatically changed his relationships with James and Lydia. The Amazon Prime Video series, a romantic drama, centers on the complicated relationship between Ruby Bell, a scholarship student, and James Beaufort, a wealthy heir, which ended in a painful split at the end of Season 1.
James and his romantic partner found their way back to each other in Season 2, but new difficulties soon emerged following the death of James’ mother, Cordelia. Cordelia’s passing dramatically altered James’ life throughout the season, and the finale brought everything to a standstill when a surprising discovery about her will threatened the future of James and his sister.
The series Maxton Hall – The World Between Us achieved record-breaking viewership for a non-American Prime Original series upon its launch. The first season began streaming on May 9, 2024, and Prime Video released the initial three episodes on November 7, 2025. Due to its success, Maxton Hall has been renewed for a third season.
Did Mortimer Change the Will In Maxton Hall Season 2?

A major theme in Maxton Hall is James’ potential future role leading the Beaufort fashion house. Although getting closer to Ruby made him rethink taking over the family business, Season 2 dramatically changed his views. Seeing his father, Mortimer, for the manipulative person he truly is – especially concerning what he did with his mother’s will – made James reconsider his inheritance even more.
After the heartbreaking loss of Cordelia, it seemed natural she’d own the majority of Beaufort. She was a direct Beaufort family member, after all. Knowing how much she loved James and Lydia, I always figured she’d leave the company to them in her will, and it’s pretty much confirmed now that she did.
The season finale revealed a shocking surprise regarding Cordelia’s will. It turns out she left everything – her company and all her property – to Mortimer. This means James and Lydia won’t receive anything. To make matters worse, Mortimer taunted James when he questioned him, implying James’s mother had underestimated him, saying, “Your mother was probably a more intelligent woman than you thought, James.”
Ophelia, Cordelia’s sister, and James believed Mortimer had altered the will and promised to fight the results. However, the season finale didn’t definitively say whether he actually did change it.
There’s been speculation that Cordelia’s will was altered because she may have been having an affair with Percy, the Beaufort family’s chauffeur. The end of Season 2 hinted at Percy’s secret sadness over Cordelia’s death, and the finale suggested he could be James’ biological father, rather than Mortimer. This would explain why Mortimer decided to change the will.
Maxton Hall’s Book 3 Revealed the Truth about Mortimer’s Actions

In Mona Kasten’s novel, Save Us, the truth about what Mortimer did to Cordelia’s will is finally revealed, proving Ophelia and James were right to suspect him. It’s discovered that Mortimer actually forged the will, mainly because he disliked Ophelia.
The last parts of Save Us showed James and Mortimer facing off, where Mortimer explained he felt he had no option but to act as he did.
James: “Dad, did you really forge Mom’s will?”
Mortimer: “I had no other choice.”
Those new to the story might not know that Mortimer began to intensely dislike Ophelia in Season 2, accusing her of only wanting his money and being overly ambitious. Ophelia didn’t stay silent, though. She revealed she’d been secretly communicating with Cordelia and was determined to expose Mortimer’s true nature, which she successfully did in Book 3.
In Save Us, it’s revealed that Ophelia was the person who brought Mortimer’s deceit to light after learning how he manipulated Cordelia’s will. The book also establishes that Mortimer has been secretly trying to prevent Ophelia from coming back.
Honestly, I was floored by what they were saying. We’d always had a clear plan: the kids would go to Oxford, and then James would take the reins of the company. I’d finally built some stability and a real strategy, but then she suddenly started suggesting bringing him back – the same person I’d worked so hard to distance myself from years ago. It took a lot of convincing, but I eventually talked her out of it.
Once Mortimer’s deception came to light, it was revealed that James and Lydia would each inherit half of the company, leaving their father with nothing. This was a major turning point for James, Lydia, and Ophelia, as they finally achieved justice against Mortimer’s mistreatment and greed, and in doing so, honored Cordelia’s memory.
