The host of the Zach Sang Show mentioned he watched episodes in both languages and noticed a significant difference. The actor who plays James, speaking in English during the interview, explained that dubbing is done so quickly it’s difficult to replicate the original emotions of the performance. He then continued to say:
As a fan, it’s always a little disappointing to learn how quickly voice dubbing has to happen. They basically give the actors just a couple of days, maybe a week at most, to record the entire show! That’s nothing compared to how long it takes to film everything originally. It’s really hard for them to get into the right headspace and deliver a truly believable performance when they’re rushed like that. It just doesn’t feel as authentic, you know?

I’ve experienced this from both sides. When I filmed The Name of the Rose in English and then re-recorded my lines in German, I really didn’t like how I sounded. Even though German is my first language, dubbing felt like a completely different skill, a different creative process altogether.
It’s pretty clear why Hardung didn’t want to provide the voiceover for the Maxton Hall TV adaptation. Despite this, Sang still asked him about the popular show on Amazon Prime, and Hardung replied with:
I voiced a show called ‘How to Sell Drugs’ on Netflix a couple of years back, and honestly, I didn’t enjoy it. After that experience, I decided I wouldn’t do my own voiceovers anymore. From then on, I’ve done the original recording and then had other voice actors handle just the dubbing.

However, I personally prefer watching shows in their original language to experience the actors’ authentic performances and nuances.
