The directors, the Russo Brothers, and Marvel Studios have been emphasizing the many beloved Marvel characters expected to reappear in Avengers: Doomsday, including faces from the Fox-era X-Men, as well as Thor, Shuri, The Thing, and even Steve Rogers. Surprisingly, one group of characters hadn’t been discussed until now, but a director involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe has shared news about their potential return in the upcoming film.
DaCosta clearly knows many people on the Avengers: Doomsday set, but her friendship with Larson, Vellani, and Parris suggests those three will likely be involved in the film. It would be surprising if the movie didn’t include some of its most popular and powerful characters, especially in what’s expected to be a major installment, and DaCosta’s comments give us more confidence that they will be featured.
Nia DaCosta Addresses Reception of The Marvels

During the same interview, DaCosta also discussed the surprising reaction to The Marvels. While the film’s box office performance wasn’t what was hoped for, she emphasized that she valued the positive relationships built during production. She said, despite the disappointing results and reviews, she knew everyone involved had given their best effort and acted with good intentions, and ultimately, that’s all that matters.
DaCosta noted the significant amount of discussion surrounding the making of the Marvel film. However, looking back, she emphasizes that everyone involved genuinely strived to create a quality movie, and she values the connections she made with the team.
The release of The Marvels happened during a strange period for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as 2023 was a year of both successes and disappointments. Following the huge success of Captain Marvel, expectations were high for the sequel, but it only grossed a little over $206 million worldwide. Since then, we’ve only seen Ms. Marvel in Marvel Zombies, and the other two characters have largely disappeared. Hopefully, director Nia DaCosta’s recent statements suggest at least some of them will reappear in the upcoming Doomsday project, and ideally, all three will be included.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
