Doomsday” suggests that The Watcher, a character introduced in Marvel Studios’ animated series “What If…?”, could play a crucial part in resolving a major mystery in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe event. Previously, The Watchers had a brief appearance in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”. This theory posits that The Watcher might transition from animation to live-action for the first time in “Avengers: Doomsday”.
Doomsday,” serving as a narrator to explain Doctor Doom’s origins, similar to his role in the animated series “What If…?” This could offer a quick summary of why Doctor Doom resembles Tony Stark, with Robert Downey Jr. potentially reprising his role from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Moreover, the theory suggests an innovative adaptation of the Tony Stark adoption storyline from the comics, which hasn’t been featured in the MCU yet.
Origins of Doom within the Avengers Saga
The film will commence with The Watcher recounting the birthplace of Doctor Doom, who in this universe was not nurtured by Howard and Maria Stark, but instead was adopted by Cynthia Von Doom.

In every episode of “What If…?”, the Watcher initially delves into how each alternate reality diverges from Earth-616. Following “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, there’s speculation that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom might hail from Earth-828, considering his unaccredited cameo in the movie’s post-credits scene. This hypothesis could lead to the Watcher revealing more about the history of the retro-futuristic world reminiscent of the 1960s that houses the Fantastic Four, potentially adding depth to the context of the Phase 6 film as well.
Anticipating that movies like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will delve into various aspects of the Marvel Cinatic Universe’s multiverse, it’s likely that the Watcher will appear. Given the abundance of heroes and villains already confirmed for the Russo brothers’ upcoming crossover events, having a significant role for the Watcher might not be appropriate. A clever approach could be to introduce him at the start of the movie to narrate Doctor Doom’s background, which would effectively utilize him without overshadowing some of the main and prominent characters.
After impressive roles in hit series such as Westworld, The Last of Us, and American Fiction (which landed him an Academy Award nomination), it would be fantastic to witness Jeffrey Wright’s live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Given that The Watcher may hold the secret as to why Doctor Doom appears like Tony Stark in Avengers: Doomsday, he could potentially shed light on this mystery. With Marvel Studios set to unveil additional cast members for Doomsday soon, Wright seems like a strong contender to join the lineup.
