Okay, so we never actually *saw* Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in the movie, but that little tease at the very end – that quick cameo – was seriously cool and got everyone talking about what Marvel might do with him. But honestly, looking back, do I think that post-credit scene hinted at even bigger plans for an *Avengers: Doomsday* movie than we realized at the time? Yeah, I think it did!
A recent rumor hints that a scene involving Susan Richards (played by Vanessa Kirby) and Victor von Doom visiting her young son, Franklin, could reveal the villain’s plans for the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* movie. According to the rumor, Doom intends to kidnap Franklin, the son of Sue and Reed Richards (played by Pedro Pascal), and exploit his powers to manage dangerous, unpredictable events occurring across the Marvel multiverse.
There have been times when different dimensions have collided, leading to the destruction of one or both. Doctor Doom apparently wants to stop these disasters by saving one dimension while letting the other be destroyed, and Franklin Richards is believed to have the power to do this. That’s why Doom might be planning to take Franklin with him.
In their first Marvel Cinematic Universe film, set for release in 2025, the Fantastic Four – consisting of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (the Thing) – faced significant challenges and even endangered the world to protect Reed and Sue’s son from Galactus. If the rumors are true, Doctor Doom’s plans will likely be the reason the Fantastic Four venture into other realities, ultimately bringing them into contact with the established heroes of the main MCU timeline, as hinted at earlier this year.
How Marvel Comics Influence This MCU Phase 6 Rumor
You can often get a good idea of what will happen in a comic book movie just by knowing the original comic. For example, many Marvel fans who saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014 probably expected Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) to return as the villain, since that plot point was already revealed in Captain America Vol. 5, #6. It’s likely fans can predict similar things in other movies by looking at the source material.
I’ve been hearing a lot about Doctor Doom trying to stop those incursions, and it seems like a big part of his plan involves Franklin Richards. It all comes from the comics, of course. Even though *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* doesn’t spell out exactly how powerful Franklin is, it’s pretty clear he can basically warp reality! With powers like that, it totally makes sense why Doom would need him to pull off whatever he’s planning.
The 2015 storyline *Secret Wars* featured Doctor Doom creating Battleworld – a brutal arena where superheroes fought – after a series of dimensional collisions ultimately destroyed the entire Marvel Multiverse. Considering this, and the upcoming 2027 film, a sequel to *Avengers: Doomsday*, it’s likely Battleworld will be a key part of the story, and that the MCU’s use of travel between dimensions is coming to an end.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2026.
