Excitement is growing for Avengers: Doomsday, which is already being called one of the biggest movies of 2026. The film promises a massive team-up of superheroes, drawing not only from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe but also bringing characters back from other universes – a key element of the current Multiverse Saga. The cast includes many popular Marvel heroes and the return of some fan-favorite actors, including Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., who many thought had left the franchise, as well as other heroes from throughout Marvel’s history.
Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi, recently shared that his character will be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new look. Speaking on TikTok with @empirestatebldg, Liu said Shang-Chi will have a completely redesigned costume in Avengers: Doomsday. He described how the new suit felt very different from his original costume in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, hinting at a significant change for the hero’s return. Liu emphasized that things evolve, and this new costume reflects that.
What Shang-Chi’s New Look Could Mean For The Character

It’s common for Marvel characters to have updated appearances between films, but Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi hasn’t been seen in four years, making his new look feel particularly significant. Fans have wondered why the MCU hadn’t followed up on Shang-Chi’s story, especially since his first movie suggested he was destined to become a major hero – potentially joining the next big Avengers team. Now, with the upcoming Doomsday film, that potential seems set to be realized, and Shang-Chi will appear with a completely refreshed design.
The character redesign might simply be to make Shang-Chi’s return feel new and exciting. However, it could also suggest that the Shang-Chi appearing in Avengers: Doomsday isn’t the same one we’ve seen before, but rather a version from another universe. Given that the movie will feature colliding realities, it’s definitely possible Simu Liu is playing an alternate Shang-Chi, particularly since the actor mentioned a significant change in his appearance.
Shang-Chi is confirmed to return in Avengers: Doomsday, but the details of his role are still a mystery. His changed appearance might be due to his ongoing use of the Ten Rings, or it could be related to his position as a new member of the Avengers. While the reason for his redesign isn’t clear, Simu Liu’s enthusiasm about reprising the role makes his comeback even more exciting, especially after his long absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
