I was so thrilled by Netflix’s hit, K-Pop Demon Hunters earlier this year, and I’m really hoping their new animated film, In Your Dreams, does just as well! It feels like they’re on a roll, and I’m excited to see if this one captures the same magic.
Created by animator Alex Woo (a former Pixar employee), this animated story centers on a brother and sister who embark on a dreamlike adventure with their stuffed animal, Baloney Tony. They hope to find the Sandman and ask him to help save their parents’ marriage.
The first draft of the script had a completely different ending and a different storyline. However, I felt the core of the story was deeply human and genuine. That central theme – that families aren’t always perfect – remains unchanged in the final version.
He explained that even in seemingly perfect situations, disagreements are inevitable. These conflicts don’t necessarily mean someone is right or wrong; it simply shows that everyone involved, like parents, are human and will naturally have different opinions or visions for the future.
Liu explained he thought it was a wonderfully positive message for children, particularly because it showed families in a more nuanced way than is often seen in movies and TV.
He explained that children often absorb what they observe around them. He believes that the media, particularly how families are portrayed on TV and in films, often presents an unrealistic image of perfection. He felt this movie was important because it offered a more honest perspective.
Liu was also drawn to the project because it gave him the opportunity to sing.
He remembered Alex saying, “I really don’t want to ask, but would you mind singing for me?” Apparently, the character Alex was casting needed to be a folk musician, so he had to audition by singing to earn the part.
The director was clearly impressed with Liu’s voice, and as a result, he was able to record a duet with his co-star, Janina Gavankar, for the movie’s soundtrack – something he found very enjoyable.
He described the song as beautiful and original, created specifically for the movie. He also expressed his excitement about collaborating with Cristin, praising her incredible voice and saying he felt lucky to be featured on the track with her. He’s eager for everyone to hear it.
