It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating the new year and making plans, but January is almost over. That means streaming services are updating their content – adding new shows and movies, but also removing some titles. This is especially tough news for horror fans who use HBO Max. Last month, the service removed two popular A24 films, Hereditary and Talk to Me, and now another critically acclaimed A24 movie – featuring an actor well-known from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – will be leaving at the end of the month.
The unsettling and visually striking film Midsommar will be leaving HBO Max on January 31st. Released in 2019, this surprise box office success (earning $48 million with a $9 million budget) was directed and written by Ari Aster and stars Florence Pugh (known for her role in Thunderbolts), along with Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, and Will Poulter. Set in a remote Swedish community, the film centers around a disturbing midsummer ritual and helped launch Florence Pugh to stardom. It’s a must-see before it’s no longer available on streaming.
Midsommar Is One of Pugh’s Best, If Not Most Unsettling, Performances

In the film Midsommar, Florence Pugh plays Dani, a college student reeling from a horrific family tragedy: her sister, struggling with mental illness, kills their parents and then herself. This event puts a severe strain on Dani’s relationship with her boyfriend, Christian. Several months later, Christian and his friends are invited to a unique midsummer festival in rural Sweden, held only once every 90 years, by their Swedish friend Pelle. Christian hesitantly brings Dani along, but the festival quickly proves to be far more than it appears, unfolding into a disturbing ritual that must be experienced to be fully understood.
Florence Pugh’s performance in Midsommar was highly praised, but she later revealed the role took a significant emotional toll, leading to six months of personal depression. Despite the challenges, Midsommar remains one of her strongest films – impressive considering her consistently good work in movies like Little Women, Don’t Worry Darling, and Thunderbolts. The film has also resonated with horror fans, offering a unique, character-focused experience that differs from typical grim horror stories. Many consider it a modern classic, and it’s currently available to stream on HBO Max before it leaves the platform.
