As a die-hard gamer, I’ve noticed the buzz surrounding Capcom’s heavy hitters like “Resident Evil” and “Monster Hunter”. It’s easy to think that these blockbusters have overshadowed the classic franchise, “Mega Man”. But in a recent shareholders meeting, Capcom made it clear that they still view “Mega Man” as one of their cornerstone intellectual properties.
Regarding future plans for the Mega Man series, the company stated that they are unable to disclose more details presently, but they continue to recognize the potential of the timeless side-scrolling game. They also confirmed they’re exploring possibilities to expand and grow the franchise further.
The company stated that the “Mega Man” franchise is a significant asset for them, and they’re always brainstorming ideas on how to expand it further. Unfortunately, they don’t have any new details to disclose at the moment.
Capcom has mentioned that they’ve received many questions regarding Mega Man merchandise, especially from markets outside Japan. They stated, “Though we don’t share specific sales figures for each IP, we get a large number of inquiries about the Mega Man series from international markets. We plan to continue growing this aspect of our business.
The Mega Man series is widely perceived as being in a state of inactivity, given that the last major installment in the franchise, Mega Man 11, was released in 2018. In the time since then, the company’s focus on Mega Man has primarily been on making its older games compatible with contemporary systems through remastered versions.
As a gaming enthusiast, I must say it’s exciting to hear that the company has been emphasizing the importance of Mega Man as a key intellectual property in their portfolio. Just like last year, during the July 2024 shareholders meeting, they mentioned that “Mega Man is one of our cherished IPs and we’re continuously brainstorming ways to develop new games around it.
It’s important to mention that despite a long period of inactivity, the Mega Man franchise continues to be largely inactive. The latest addition to the series was actually remasters for the Mega Man Battle Network series. As of now, it appears as though the company is struggling to figure out how to revive the classic side-scrolling mainline series and adapt it to today’s gaming environment.
In 2023, the company discussed their ongoing exploration of creating fresh games within the franchise. They were not only considering innovative gameplay but also new themes, ideas, and other elements as well.
The Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, released way back in 2023, has been a major hit for the company since then. As confirmed in April 2023, the collection surpassed the 1 million copy sales mark. For additional information about the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, feel free to read our review, where we awarded it a rating of 7 out of 10.
