Metal Gear Solid Voice Actor Doesn’t Understand “All Of” the Story

The Metal Gear series is famous for its extremely complex storyline, filled with conspiracies, cyborgs, artificial intelligence, and soldiers. David Hayter, the well-known voice of the main character Snake, has admitted that even he struggles to follow everything that happens. In an interview with Fall Damage, Hayter explained that while he understands the general plot, many details remain confusing to him.

“Do I understand the story of Metal Gear Solid?” he said. “Uh, basically, I do. Do I understand all of it? Absolutely not.” This was especially true while he was recording lines for the games, and he would even have to frequently ask the developers what some lines might mean. It is worth remembering that, in the past, games didn’t make use of motion capture for faces, which meant that voice acting work was often done in isolated booths.

He remembered being confused by the game’s jargon and asking what things meant. The response he’d get was simply, ‘just say it.’ He explained that this intricate storytelling is really what defines the Metal Gear series – it’s what makes Metal Gear, Metal Gear.

I’ve noticed something really cool about playing Metal Gear games. It’s like there’s always a deeper layer to the story. It’s not just what’s happening on the screen, but little details about the plot, or even why characters are doing what they’re doing. There’s a lot more going on beneath the surface if you pay attention!

He explained that the game offers a lot more depth – richer characters, a more detailed story, and so much information that you’ll discover new things even after multiple playthroughs. This is what truly brings the game’s world to life and makes it so engaging.

David Hayter first became known as the voice of Snake in the 1998 game Metal Gear Solid, originally for PlayStation and PC. He continued in the role for several sequels, including Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001), Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008), and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010). Though he voiced Snake in various spin-offs and remakes, Hayter was replaced for Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes (2014) and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain (2015). Recently, he returned to the role of Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the 2004 game.

As Konami prepares to release Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 on August 27th, reflections on the Metal Gear series are surfacing. This collection features Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Metal Gear Solid 4 originally launched on PlayStation 3 and concludes the story of Solid Snake. Peace Walker, set a few years after Snake Eater, details the events leading to Big Boss’s transformation into the antagonist he is in the original Metal Gear game.

You can find more details about Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, including a look at the Threat Ring feature in Guns of the Patriots (shown in a video last week). The collection will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming Switch 2.
