The new Metro game, Metro 2039, is officially confirmed! Xbox will reveal the first gameplay footage during a special showcase on April 16th at 10 AM Pacific Time.
While specific details are still scarce, the new game is confirmed as the fourth major installment in the Metro series. It will once again be set in a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by nuclear war. Considering the title, the game likely takes place around three years after the events of Metro Exodus, which came out in 2019.
Details about the game’s story are still a mystery, though developers promise it will be even more intense than previous installments. 4A Games hasn’t revealed much since the game was first announced in 2020. The good news is we know it’s planned for release on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Hopefully, we’ll also find out more about the multiplayer component the studio has been developing.
It’s a bit strange to see this presented as part of an Xbox event. While the company says they’ve always supported the series and are happy to continue doing so with this preview, it makes you think there might be more to it – perhaps a deal to bring the game to Xbox Game Pass.
I guess Microsoft could be right about this whole thing. I mean, Metro 2033 first came out on Xbox 360 and PC and stayed that way for a long time. It almost feels like 4A Games is back where they belong, you know?
We’ll have full coverage of Metro 2039 later this week, so be sure to check back. In the meantime, you can read our review of Metro Exodus.
