One of the producers who worked on Metroid Prime 2: Echoes has expressed support for a remake, but not for the reasons most fans might think. Following the successful 2023 release of the remastered original Metroid Prime on Nintendo Switch, players quickly requested that Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3 receive similar updates. While that hasn’t happened yet, the producer shares that hope for the future.
In the new art book, Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective, franchise producer Kensuke Tanabe expressed interest in remaking the second Metroid Prime game. Surprisingly, his main reason isn’t about improving the graphics or gameplay—he wants more people to experience the multiplayer mode. When Metroid Prime 2 originally launched, players could only compete against each other locally. Tanabe believes a remake with online multiplayer would allow a much wider audience to enjoy this part of the game.

Tanabe explained that the original Retro game’s multiplayer feature was well-made, even though it was limited to local, in-person play due to the technology of the time. This meant not many people got to try it out. He’d be thrilled if a remake allowed a wider audience to enjoy it.
For a couple of years, rumors have circulated that Nintendo is working on a new version of Metroid Prime 2 for the Switch, but the company hasn’t confirmed anything. Even if a remastered version does come out, it’s not certain whether the multiplayer mode would be included. Nintendo has a history of leaving out multiplayer features in its remastered games. This means a developer’s hope for a widely played Metroid Prime 2 multiplayer experience might not become a reality.
Fans can finally look forward to Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launching on December 4th for both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
