With the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond getting closer, it seems Nintendo won’t be holding a separate Direct presentation. However, they haven’t left fans in the dark – a new trailer has just been released, giving a good overview of everything you need to know about Samus’s latest mission.
The game takes place on the planet Viewros, where Samus unexpectedly appears after a clash with her opponent, Sylux. Not much is known about Viewros except that it was once inhabited by the Lamorn people. To escape, Samus must explore and scan the environment for a way off. The planet is divided into four distinct areas, each designed like a complex maze. Samus will use new psychic powers – including precise aiming and the ability to transform into a Morph Ball while in the air – to navigate these challenging regions.
The vast open desert is a key part of the game, and that’s where the bike, Vi-O-La, really shines. You can use it to take down enemies, slide into them in a dramatic fashion – think Akira – and even break apart objects to gather energy. You’ll also be able to call Vi-O-La to you in different locations, though how often you’ll be able to do that is still unknown. Hopefully, it won’t be as overused as the Batmobile in Batman: Arkham Knight.
One of the most unexpected features in Metroid Prime 4 is the ability to find and rescue AI companions – Galactic Federation soldiers caught in the same predicament as Samus. Saving them rewards you with upgrades and lets them assist in combat. While a cool addition, it’s a departure from the traditionally solitary experience of Metroid games.
The highly anticipated game, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, will be available on Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2 starting December 4th. You can find a detailed look at the gameplay here.
