It’s looking less and less likely that Nintendo will ever release Metroid Prime 5. While fans were excited to finally see Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launch after nearly ten years, the game received mixed reviews. Some felt it felt a bit old-fashioned, making it one of the lowest-rated Metroid Prime games. Now, reports suggest these reviews have hurt Metroid Prime 4’s sales, which could negatively impact the future of the series.
Nintendo recently released its financial report covering sales up to March 31, 2026. Notably absent from the data was Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, suggesting it hasn’t yet sold one million copies. Considering how quickly other Nintendo games reach that milestone, this indicates Metroid Prime 4 hasn’t been a strong performer, particularly given its lengthy and expensive development.
The biggest problem is that most games sell the vast majority of their copies within the first few months or a year after release. This doesn’t bode well for Metroid Prime 4, as it’s unlikely to see a significant surge in sales later on, particularly because Nintendo rarely offers discounts on its games.

The disappointing launch of Metroid Prime 4 will likely cause Nintendo to reconsider plans for a Metroid Prime 5. While the Metroid franchise itself isn’t going anywhere, the Prime series hasn’t historically been a huge seller, despite receiving positive reviews. Since MP4 didn’t meet expectations from critics or customers, Nintendo might decide to end the Prime sub-series completely.
Considering the troubled development of Metroid Prime 4, Nintendo might decide to simply move on without trying to learn too much from its performance. If a potential Metroid Prime 5 is developed more easily, it could be much more successful than MP4 has been.
