Michael B. Jordan recently won his first Oscar for his role in Sinners. Before that, five years ago, he appeared in the action thriller Without Remorse, which was co-written by Taylor Sheridan. Currently, Without Remorse is the most popular movie on a free streaming platform.
Okay, so when Without Remorse first came out, people were definitely talking about Michael B. Jordan – he was great, and the action was solid. But honestly, most critics weren’t impressed. They said it felt like we’d seen this story a million times before, and the plot was just… predictable. Looking at Rotten Tomatoes, it’s sitting at a pretty low 45% from critics, and even lower – 41% – from regular viewers. Still, it’s kind of wild – the film is actually number one on Tubi right now, the day after Michael B. Jordan’s Oscar win! It just goes to show you, a star can definitely give a movie a boost.
What Is Without Remorse About?
Based on the 1993 novel by Tom Clancy, Without Remorse was co-written by Sheridan and Will Staples. The film, directed by Stefano Sollima, features Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly, a Navy SEAL seeking vengeance against the Russians responsible for the deaths of his wife and fellow team members.
criticized the film for being too generic. The review concludes:
The initial plan for Without Remorse was to bring Michael B. Jordan back as John Clark, a character from Tom Clancy’s novels and a popular video game series. Now that the movie has moved from Paramount to Amazon, it’s uncertain if those plans will continue. However, the film feels more like a lengthy preview of the story fans are truly hoping for. This is emphasized by a post-credits scene that quickly tries to reverse the events of the actual ending. While John Clark is a well-known character in Clancy’s work, Without Remorse feels generic and doesn’t make him particularly memorable.
Will Without Remorse Get a Sequel?
The movie Without Remorse was intended to be the first in a series of films based on the works of Tom Clancy. However, because the film wasn’t well-received, plans for future installments were put on hold.
Despite hinting at a sequel to Without Remorse with its ending – a film called Rainbow Six – Amazon MGM is moving slowly with development. Originally, production was scheduled to begin once Chad Stahelski finished John Wick: Chapter 4. However, five years after Without Remorse was released, Rainbow Six still hasn’t begun filming.
I’ve been following this project for a while, and it’s been a long road to get Without Remorse made! I remember hearing Keanu Reeves and even Tom Hardy were considered for the lead role of Kelly way back when. It’s a bit strange, because even though the action is pretty intense, the whole franchise feels like it’s taking its time unfolding.
Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Luke Mitchell, Jack Kesy, Brett Gelman, Lauren London, Colman Domingo, and Guy Pearce join Michael B. Jordan in the cast of Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse.
Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse is available to stream now, for free, on Tubi.
