Spy fans have a new show to anticipate later this year! Michael Fassbender, who was once considered for the role of James Bond, stars in the thrilling new series The Agency on Paramount+. His performance is reminiscent of Jason Bourne.
This spy show is one of the best on television, offering a gripping story about a CIA agent whose secret life is threatened by events in their personal life. What makes it different is its focus on the emotional toll that spying takes on individuals. The main character is always on edge, dealing with the constant danger and loneliness of working in the shadows.
Michael Fassbender seems perfectly cast as the mysterious central character, “Martian,” and he’s joined by a fantastic supporting cast. With stars like Jeffrey Wright and Katherine Waterston, plus a special appearance by Richard Gere, The Agency boasts an incredibly talented ensemble.
The Agency Is Paramount’s Version Of The Bourne Franchise
While Jason Bourne inspired the Treadstone TV series, The Agency: Central Intelligence feels like a more natural continuation of the movies starring Matt Damon. The show’s agent, known as “Martian,” is just as skilled and capable as Bourne himself.
Both The Agency and the Bourne films feature main characters who struggle with paranoia and questions about who they really are. These characters are constantly in danger, facing threats not only from external enemies but also from people within their own organizations.
Even though working undercover is risky and emotionally challenging, “Martian” handles it with remarkable skill. He remains calm and collected in stressful situations, much like the character Jason Bourne.
Like the character of Bourne, his love interest becomes a weakness that quickly leads him into dangerous situations in The Agency. The show borrows heavily from classic spy films like the Bourne series, incorporating almost every familiar element of the genre.
Michael Fassbender Makes Up For Missing Out On James Bond In The Agency
Michael Fassbender recently shared his experience auditioning for the role of James Bond before Daniel Craig was cast in Casino Royale. While Daniel Craig ultimately proved to be an excellent Bond, many believe Fassbender would have also been a fantastic choice for 007.
In his role in The Agency, co-written by a writer from the Spectre Bond film, he convincingly portrays the cool, composed nature of a top secret agent. He also captivates audiences with a mysterious and intriguing presence, skillfully holding back and leaving them wanting more.
Michael Fassbender excels at portraying secret agents, a skill he demonstrated in Steven Soderbergh’s 2025 film, Black Bag. The Agency provides the perfect showcase for an actor with his range to create a compelling character: a brilliant, capable spy who is also haunted by their experiences.
The Agency Is Returning For Season 2 In 2026
Following a popular first season, The Agency is back for more, and actor Amir El-Masry is joining the cast. Known for his roles in Star Wars and Jack Ryan, El-Masry will play an Emirati intelligence officer who may become an enemy of Michael Fassbender’s character.
Even though we don’t know the exact release date in 2026, there’s plenty to look forward to with the show’s return. “The Agency” has the potential to become a popular, long-lasting spy series, much like the Bourne movies on television, if the second season lives up to the promise of its first.
