Michael Jackson’s Nephew Reveals He Danced Until His Feet Bled While Becoming The King Of Pop For Upcoming Biopic

Jaafar Jackson, the lead actor in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, has discussed the intense challenges of portraying his uncle, the iconic singer.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie Michael tells the story of the pop star’s life and career, starting with his days in the Jackson 5 and going up to the release of his album Bad. The film stars Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, and Juliano Valdi, alongside Jackson himself, in what marks his first time appearing in a movie.

Some might assume that Jaafar Jackson had an advantage getting the role, as he’s the nephew of Michael Jackson – the son of his brother and Jackson 5 bandmate, Jermaine. However, a look behind the scenes of the movie shows he underwent intense training, especially to master Michael’s famous dance style.

Jaime Jackson, who played Michael Jackson, admitted the role was incredibly difficult. “I knew how challenging this would be… to take on playing Michael Jackson,” he explained, “And it was not easy, definitely wasn’t.” He prepared by training with choreographers Rich and Tone Talauega, who had previously worked with his uncle and on the 2022 musical, MJ The Musical. Although producer Graham King initially doubted his ability, he eventually allowed Jackson time to hone his dancing skills.

Jackson shared that he thrives on challenges and was determined to prove his abilities to himself, his family, and the people making the film. He described intense rehearsals, practicing for hours until every movement was perfect. He pushed himself to the point of physical pain – dancing until his feet bled or lost feeling. He often questioned whether to keep going when he was sore, but then would ask himself, ‘What would Michael Jackson do?’

Fuqua emphasized the importance of precisely recreating Michael Jackson’s dance moves, stating that even small details were crucial. He explained that Jackson was a dedicated performer who “never stopped dancing” and continued to rehearse right up until filming began.

Training was challenging for Jackson, but he was determined to give a great performance as a tribute to his uncle. He recalled a moment before going on stage, saying, “I looked in the mirror with my hair, makeup, and costume on, and I realized ‘Wow, this is really happening. There’s no turning back now. It’s time to give the best performance I can.'”

In 2024, three of Michael Jackson’s brothers – Tito, Jackie, and Marlon – shared their thoughts on seeing their nephew, Jaafar, portray Michael on stage. Marlon explained, “I’m not just saying this because he’s family, but it’s the truth. Many artists tried to imitate Michael, and some were good at it. But Jaafar didn’t imitate him; he became Michael, and that’s what set him apart.”

Jackie explained that around 2,000 people auditioned for the role of Michael. He then shared that when they first saw the actor, it was incredibly emotional – everyone started crying, feeling like they were looking at their brother. Tito agreed, saying they were amazed by how much the actor resembled Michael.

Michael releases in theaters on April 24, 2026.
