Directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone, Scarface tells the story of Tony Montana (Al Pacino) and his journey to becoming a powerful drug lord, and his eventual downfall. While reviews were initially mixed when it came out in 1983, the film is now considered a classic.
Although most of the actors in Scarface were already well-known, Michelle Pfeiffer was just starting her career. She was primarily recognized for her role in Grease 2, which almost prevented her from being cast as Elvira, Tony Montana’s wife with a drug addiction.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michelle Pfeiffer recently shared that Al Pacino wasn’t initially enthusiastic about her being cast in the film. While her first audition with Brian De Palma went well, the long and drawn-out casting process left her feeling exhausted, and her later auditions started to show it. “I just got more and more nervous over the two months, and it showed,” Pfeiffer explained.
Pfeiffer remembered Pacino simply saying, “She’s terrible.” Then, Brian De Palma came to her and told her the film wasn’t going to work out with her. She replied that she understood and apologized, explaining that De Palma really wanted her for the role.
Michelle Pfeiffer initially thought she hadn’t landed the role, and she was actually relieved. “Despite being disappointed, I was glad to be finished with the audition process,” she said. “Then, about a month later, they called and asked me to do a screen test. I went in, but I didn’t really care, because I assumed I wasn’t going to get the part.”
Even though she believed she hadn’t gotten the role, her audition actually led to her being cast. Surprisingly, a mishap during the audition was the very thing that impressed Al Pacino and helped her win the part.
“I swept my hand across the table, and dishes and glasses shattered,” Pfeiffer explained. “There was blood all over the place. Everyone rushed over to see where I’d been hurt, but I hadn’t cut myself—I’d cut Al.”
Michelle Pfeiffer was worried she’d lose the part if she accidentally hurt Al Pacino during filming. But she felt that was the moment Pacino decided she was good for the role. She ended up getting the part, and her performance in Scarface really launched her film career.
