This year marks Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, and following a unique 50th celebration held in April, they are now distributing limited-edition Surface Laptop 7 units to a select few winners from a competition. The special edition laptop showcases a gold Microsoft logo on the cover and an old-style Microsoft logo from 1975 inside the device.
It’s worth noting that along with these unique gadgets comes a distinctive software update. This update features a fresh 50th startup screen logo and, most notably, a new default Windows 11 background to celebrate five full decades of Microsoft.
It appears that the unique wallpaper for the new Surface Laptop 7 is only available during its 50th anniversary, making it a rather special and scarce version of Windows 11 wallpapers. Fortunately, we’ve been fortunate enough to obtain this exclusive 50th anniversary Surface Laptop, allowing us to share the default wallpaper with you!

Since its introduction in 2021, Microsoft has created multiple versions of the Windows 11 background image, which is known as “Bloom.” The default version depicts an abstract blue “blossom,” and it’s offered in both light and dark versions to match the light and dark themes found on Windows 11. This design was created by “Six N. Five,” who has collaborated with Microsoft on Surface wallpapers in the past.
However, in addition to offering the standard versions of this wallpaper for Windows 365, the company has also delivered distinct designs. These versions retain both light and dark options, but they showcase a slightly modified flower that exudes a more glass-like appearance. Notably, the Windows 365 Link device comes preloaded with an even more translucent version of this wallpaper.
Over the past few years, various versions of the Bloom wallpaper, matching the color schemes of different Surface devices, have been included with each device release. In 2024, Microsoft introduced the Copilot+ PC line, and to coincide with this launch, they updated the Bloom wallpaper to reflect the colors found in the Copilot logo.
The 50th edition of Bloom wallpaper is the most recent addition to a series that’s spanned many years, and undeniably the most elusive one. This version showcases a significantly darker blossom, adorned with golden highlights scattered throughout, mirroring the gold accents present on the 50th anniversary Surface Laptop 7.

In 2019, when Windows 10 launched its new light theme, the interface underwent another update. The previous wallpaper was swapped out for a lighter version that harmonized with the fresh Windows 10 look at the time. The design had become more streamlined and no longer resembled a real photograph; in essence, it had been slightly simplified, which could be seen as a step back from the original.
Additionally, you’ll find a distinct version of this wallpaper designed specifically for Windows 365. Although it shares the same design, it features a slightly altered color tone. Microsoft has also unveiled several adaptations of this wallpaper as part of their Pride celebrations.
In time, a different version of the Windows 10 wallpaper was uncovered within an early build of Windows 11 that had been leaked. This specific version was inspired by the initial Hero wallpaper but featured slightly more vibrant colors. To my knowledge, this variant of the wallpaper was never distributed officially.
It’s intriguing to observe various editions of Windows desktop backgrounds, particularly rare ones that aren’t commonly distributed or difficult to find. The 50th anniversary wallpaper belongs to the exclusive group of hard-to-find variants, even though it officially ships, as it is only accessible on hardware that was never offered for sale.
