Microsoft is aiming to transform Windows into an AI-powered operating system where intelligent agents handle tasks for users. They recently announced a significant Windows 11 update that moves them closer to achieving this goal.
Microsoft is developing a new AI feature called Copilot Actions for Windows 11. As part of this, they’ve also added a voice command – simply say “Hey Copilot” – to quickly activate Copilot’s visual search capabilities.
Hey Copilot lets you use Microsoft’s AI assistant with just your voice, anytime. Voice activation is now common – you can already use assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri hands-free on many devices. Microsoft previously offered a similar feature called Hey Cortana.
Because Copilot is now a core part of Windows 11, accessing it will likely offer more ways to interact with the AI than simply using a traditional digital assistant.
Because you can already start conversations with Copilot using “Hey Copilot,” Microsoft is adding the ability to end those voice sessions by simply saying “goodbye.”
The feature appears on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap and was first spotted by Neowin:
“Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft 365): Semantic Goodbye word for voice in Microsoft 365 Copilot
Users can now end voice conversations on Windows by simply saying “bye” or “goodbye”. Combined with the “Hey Copilot” wake word, this allows for a completely hands-free voice experience with Microsoft 365 Copilot on Windows.
This feature is currently being tested, and we plan to release it next month, though the exact date is subject to change.
Normally, saying “Hey Copilot” starts a conversation, but you can also set it up to activate Copilot Vision instead. It’s probably possible to end the conversation with Copilot using a similar method.
Copilot Vision recently received attention after a misleading Microsoft ad sparked confusion. The ad, which has since been removed, demonstrated Copilot incorrectly assisting a user with a Windows 11 setting, with the on-screen character falsely portraying the feature as functional.
Microsoft needs to make Copilot on Windows 11 better before users will consistently use it and start activating it with the voice command, “Hey Copilot.”
