Anthony Horowitz, the author behind popular books like the Alex Rider series and the Susan Ryeland mysteries, and also known for his work on TV shows such as Foyle’s War and Midsomer Murders, has hinted at his upcoming project: an adaptation of another one of his book series.
Anthony Horowitz recently shared on BBC Breakfast that he and his wife, Jill Green – who is also his longtime producer – are developing his ‘Hawthorne’ book series into a television show. The first book in the series came out in 2017.
He mentioned he’s currently developing a TV series based on Hawthorne. While it hasn’t been officially picked up by a network yet, he’s been hired to write the script.
The book series currently consists of five novels, all featuring detective Daniel Hawthorne. They are: The Word Is Murder (2017), The Sentence Is Death (2018), A Line to Kill (2021), The Twist of a Knife (2022), and Close to Death (2024).

In the novels, when Hawthorne investigates cases, he also brings on a writer to document his work, offering them both a chance to earn extra money. Interestingly, this writer is actually Horowitz himself, who jokingly described himself as a modern-day Dr. Watson to Hawthorne’s Sherlock Holmes.
The latest installment, Close to Death, gets really clever – a murder happens while a movie is being filmed, and that movie is based on the very first book by Hawthorne and Horowitz themselves!

Although it feels distant, fans of the Susan Ryeland series won’t have to wait much longer for the next installment of the BBC’s adaptation of Horowitz’s work, based on Hawthorne.
The TV series based on Anthony Horowitz’s mystery novels began with ‘Magpie Murders’ in 2022 and continued with ‘Moonflower Murders’ in 2024. This year, the adaptation of the final book in the trilogy, ‘Marble Hall Murders,’ will be released.
Lesley Manville will reprise her role as Susan, and Timothy McMullan will return as Atticus Pünd, the character she created in her books.
Marble Hall Murders will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in 2026.
