Arne Olsen, who wrote the screenplay for the 1995 film Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, has died at the age of 64. He passed away in Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday, April 4th, after a battle with cancer. His wife, Dianne Olsen, confirmed the news to Deadline. He is survived by his children, Ryan and Alyssa.
Born and raised in Vancouver, Olsen moved to Los Angeles at 21 to become a screenwriter. He graduated from the American Film Institute in 1987 and quickly landed his first screenwriting job in 1988 with the action film Red Scorpion (and its sequel). He went on to work on a variety of projects, including the thriller Black Ice, the comedy Cop & 1/2 starring Burt Reynolds, the sci-fi action film Final Round, and the animated movie Thumbelina. His big break came with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. Released at the peak of the Power Rangers TV show’s popularity, the film was a box office success, earning over $66 million on a $15 million budget.
Beyond just being a movie, the big-screen adaptation significantly improved the show’s quality and brought Power Rangers into the public eye, creating a much larger and more passionate fanbase that continues to grow. Olsen became a legend within the franchise for delivering what fans considered the most impressive Power Rangers story up to that time, and MMPR:TM remains a landmark achievement for the series.
We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Arne Olsen. He will be greatly missed by fans of Power Rangers and the wider film industry, and we are grateful for all his creative work. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time.
This is a developing story…
