Vampire Crawlers is a unique game – it shares similarities with Vampire Survivors, but also offers a distinctly different experience.
It feels really familiar, honestly. I just get lost in it when I’m playing – hours fly by! Plus, it uses a lot of the same characters, items, and even looks similar to games I already love. But it’s totally different too, because it’s a completely different type of game.
The real strength lies in how well it combines familiar elements with something completely new, creating a spin-off that delivers the same thrills and enjoyment as the original, but in a fresh and unique dungeon-crawling deckbuilder experience.
Your Crawler is the character you select, and it determines your starting cards. You’ll explore maps made of squares, moving one space at a time to fight enemies and find treasure as you try to become more powerful.
When you defeat enemies, you earn experience points. As you level up, you get to choose a reward, usually by adding a new card to your deck or improving a card you already have with a gem to make it more powerful.
The game features cards that act like weapons, health items, shields, and various power-ups – things players of Vampire Survivors will recognize. Weapons can also be upgraded, similar to how they work in that game. For example, combining the Garlic and Pummarola cards will create the powerful Soul Eater.
More powerful cards cost more mana to use, and mana itself is a valuable resource that’s key to winning battles.
Playing cards from lowest to highest mana cost starts a combo that makes each following card more and more powerful. This, along with clever strategies and strong abilities, creates a game that’s just as satisfyingly powerful as the first one, but with a greater emphasis on planning. Ultimately, it’s a really enjoyable experience.
The companion you choose for your run can really shake things up, because each one reacts differently depending on the cards you use.
Similar to games like Survivors, Vampire Crawlers lets you unlock lots of content and make lasting improvements to help you progress. It might feel a little restricted at first, but after playing for a few hours, you’ll find more features opening up in the main menu, and better rewards appearing in each level.
The game’s biggest issues come down to how you move and interact with it. The controls, especially while exploring dungeons, feel stiff and a little awkward. Also, using the menus with a controller can be tricky and require precise movements.
Overall, these are small issues. Vampire Crawlers is really enjoyable – it’s quick, requires strategy, and is incredibly rewarding. We highly recommend it, but be warned, it’s very addictive!
