Now that Skydance Media and Paramount Pictures have finalized their merger, Deadline has been examining their upcoming cinematic schedule. Predictably, they seem to be concentrating on blockbuster productions, with Top Gun 3 being one of the projects at the forefront. At present, there are no confirmed production schedules or release dates for this film, but as Cruise reportedly is exploring his next project, things could start moving forward soon.
According to a report in Deadline, Paramount Pictures’ co-chair Dana Goldberg stated that Top Gun is particularly important to them.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the extraordinary success of “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, raking in an impressive $1.4 billion globally and garnering universal praise, even receiving a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Given its triumphant reception, it seemed almost inevitable that we’d see Tom Cruise back in the cockpit for “Top Gun 3”. However, over the past couple of years, it appears that progress on this much-anticipated sequel has been somewhat stagnant. The primary reason for this delay might be attributed to Cruise’s packed schedule. During this period, he was immersed in making “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and collaborating with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu on a new film project.
At the end of May, the anticipated third installment of “Top Gun” received an intriguing development as screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie and his co-writer Ehren Kruger revealed they had successfully formulated the movie’s narrative. However, it’s not yet certain that the film will actually be produced. Joseph Kosinski, who directed “Top Gun: Maverick,” has stated that they will only proceed with making the movie if they believe they possess a compelling and valuable storyline to share.
Tom Cruise was previously working on an underwater thriller called “Deeper,” but production has been paused due to financial issues. With that project moving elsewhere, it seems Cruise is looking for another opportunity in the meantime. There’s a possibility that “Top Gun 3” may be in the works now, as Paramount views this franchise as a priority and Cruise finds himself with some free time. Additionally, Cruise has shown interest in creating a movie musical. Regarding Top Gun 3, it’s uncertain if this will be his immediate focus, even though Paramount is prepared to start production.
