Misty Copeland’s Son Joins Her Onstage for First Time in Final Show

Misty Copeland is dancing into a new chapter with her family by her side. 

After a career spanning over twenty years with American Ballet Theatre, the dancer gave her final performance in New York City on October 22nd. Following the special occasion, her husband, Olu Evans, and their three-year-old son, Jackson, sweetly joined her onstage for a final bow.

Misty shared a video on Instagram on October 23rd showing highlights of her dances at the gala. After her performances, her husband and son, both wearing matching suits, presented her with beautiful bouquets while confetti fell and the audience applauded.

Misty shared a touching video with the caption, ‘Last night was a moment I’ll never forget.’ After 25 years dancing with American Ballet Theatre, she took her final bow, surrounded by the dancers and supporters who meant so much to her and her career.

The 43-year-old shared how meaningful it was to celebrate this achievement with her family. She especially cherished the moment because it was the first time her son, Jackson, had watched her perform on stage.

Even though Misty is retiring from performing, she’s still involved with ballet and the company.

She expressed her excitement about continuing to work with American Ballet Theatre as a trustee, and her commitment to helping the next group of dancers and artists shape the future of ballet.

Misty began her career with the American Ballet Theatre in 2000, initially as a studio member. She quickly rose through the ranks, joining the main company (the corps) in 2001. In 2015, she achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first African American woman to be named a principal dancer with the company.

Misty is incredibly accomplished – she’s a successful professional, a published author of nine books, and a Broadway performer. However, she’s also talked about how having a child has given her a new outlook on her work.

Becoming a parent has completely shifted my perspective on time,” she shared on CBS Mornings in 2023. “While I still need time for myself, I’ve realized it’s okay to not always prioritize that – it’s all about finding the right balance.
