The first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters really expanded the Monsterverse, offering details the movies often don’t have time for because they prioritize big action sequences. The show’s cast is a major reason it works so well, and one character in particular is central to the story. Although the first season left this character in a difficult situation, the beginning of season 2 has already resolved that issue.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Season 2 Does Not Waste Time To Undo Season 1’s Biggest Cliffhanger
The most shocking moment in the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters involved Lee Shaw. Portrayed by Wyatt Russell in flashbacks and his father, Kurt Russell, in the present, Shaw seemingly sacrificed himself by falling into the Axis Mundi to allow Keiko and the team to escape.
At the end of the first season, viewers didn’t know what happened to Shaw, leaving many to wonder how the second season would proceed without him. But the show quickly revealed that Lee Shaw was, in fact, still alive. The first episode of season 2 showed him surviving within the mysterious Axis Mundi and made him the central character of the hour.
Okay, so the new season kicks off with Cate making a huge decision – she’s determined to save Shaw, because he did the same for her before. And honestly? It completely flips the script on the biggest cliffhanger from season one of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters! Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw is back, and it turns out he’s going to be a major player again. It does kind of change things from how we left them last season, but I think it was the right move. It feels good to have him back in the mix!
Why Monarch Was Right To Bring Back Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw So Soon
Although the show wasn’t required to kill off Lee, keeping him around in the Axis Mundi for a bit longer could have allowed the story of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to develop differently. Still, Kurt Russell’s portrayal of the older Shaw is such a highlight of the show that removing him would be a significant loss.
I really hope they explore Keiko’s feelings for Lee more. Now that she’s back on Earth, and we know she developed feelings for him even while married to Bill Randa, that connection feels really important. I think it would be amazing to see Keiko struggle with those complex emotions, and maybe Lee could be the one stable thing in her life as she tries to figure out what comes next.
With Lee Shaw now older and changed, seeing how she responds to the current version of herself will likely add even more emotional depth to the show, which is already known for its strong character development. Her return also has the potential to tie the show’s earlier storylines about Titan X into the present day, creating a compelling new season and mystery for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
