As shown in the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Axis Mundi is a sort of in-between world – a place that connects Earth to the Titans’ home, the Hollow Earth. Like the Hollow Earth, it’s filled with monsters of all sizes. While Skull Island also has its share of beasts, the monsters in Axis Mundi appear even more dangerous. Season 2 highlights that Kong becomes angered when humans create openings to Axis Mundi, threatening the safety of the world he protects.
The first episode of Season 2, “Cause and Effect,” introduces what appears to be the most dangerous enemy in the Axis Mundi series. It’s difficult to envision a greater threat, and could potentially be the most powerful villain we’ve seen in the entire MonsterVerse so far.
Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, Episode 1 “Cause and Effect” follow.
What Is Titan X?

In the 1957 scenes of “Cause and Effect,” Keiko Miura, Bill Randa, and a young Lee Shaw travel to Santa Soledad Island in Chile hoping to find a sea monster. While they don’t encounter one in this particular episode, they do discover a strange, mutated horseshoe crab in a local bar. The bartender, intrigued by Randa’s interest, agrees to show them ancient cave paintings – with the understanding they’ll leave afterward – depicting a massive, tentacled creature that the islanders have worshipped as a god for generations.
In 2017, Monarch’s Natalia Verdugo warns that rescuing the aging Lee Shaw from Axis Mundi is too dangerous, as Kong is already agitated by human interference in his territory. However, Cate Randa and Keiko ignore her and launch a rescue mission, joined by May Olowe-Hewitt, Kentaro Randa, and Cate and Kentaro’s father, Hiroshi. Shortly after, Verdugo and Monarch staffer Tim arrive on the scene.
The team manages to pull Lee to safety, but right as he’s climbing out, a massive creature – known only as “Titan X” – bursts through the portal. It snatches Verdugo and quickly escapes into the forest, breaking trees as it heads toward the ocean. The noise alerts Kong, who rushes to the portal, destroys the device that created it, and then gives chase.
Titan X isn’t just as powerful as Kong – it’s actually faster and reaches the ocean first, leaving Kong frustrated and unable to protect his territory. Essentially, we have a Titan that matches Kong in size and speed, but Kong can’t reach it, which is why Godzilla is joining the fight this season.
The Ion Dragon in the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters looked cool, but it wasn’t a very challenging enemy for Godzilla. Titan X, however, appears to be a much more formidable opponent. While we haven’t seen its full capabilities yet, it has a head resembling a fish or reptile and eight tentacles, each covered in sharp hooks.
It’s going to be fascinating to see how Kong battles an enemy that lives in the ocean. But just as intriguing is the mystery of how this creature is both worshipped on Earth and connected to the realm of Axis Mundi. Did someone send it there long ago using old technology? The people of Santa Soledad Island will likely have strong reactions to its return. And what role do those strange, horseshoe crab-like creatures – the Scarabs – play in all of this? We’ll find out the answers as Season 2 unfolds.
