Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is now streaming on Apple TV+, expanding the story within the Monsterverse. The first season was a major turning point, uncovering the origins of the Monarch organization and how its founders – Bill Randa, Keiko Miura, and Col. Lee Shaw – first discovered and confirmed the existence of Titans like Godzilla. It also introduced a mysterious realm between our world and Hollow Earth, and a strange time phenomenon that brought characters previously lost to the past back to the present with little time having passed.
With the start of Monarch Season 2, the show is expanding its cast and bringing in elements from other parts of the Monsterverse, including Apex Cybernetics and the Skull Island research facility where Kong lives. Here’s a list of who’s joining the cast, both new and returning, and the characters they’ll be playing.
The Monsters
16. Godzilla

The trailers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters show that the series will continue the story of Godzilla defending Earth from dangerous Titans, taking place before he officially becomes known as the “King of Monsters” after his battle with Ghidorah. Interestingly, Godzilla will also receive assistance from someone who will become an important ally, though he doesn’t realize it yet, and who shares his goal of protecting the planet.
15. Kong

In the season finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Kong made it clear he wasn’t pleased with Monarch and Apex Cybernetics building a base on Skull Island, his home. He was especially upset about scientists opening portals to a mysterious realm connecting Earth and Hollow Earth – a place where dangerous Titans could emerge. Trailers for Monarch Season 2 suggest that at least one Titan will indeed break through.
14. Titan X

In Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, a new monster called “Titan X” appears. This sea creature has a long history on Earth, potentially stretching back hundreds of years. Some fans speculate Titan X could be a new take on a classic monster from Toho, the company behind Godzilla, but that’s still unconfirmed. What we do know is that Titan X will challenge both Kong and Godzilla, and keep the Monarch team occupied across two timelines: the 1950s and 2017.
The Humans
13. Cate Randa (Anna Sawai)

In Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Cate Randa will be driven to return to the mysterious realm where she last saw Col. Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell), all while trying to save her grandmother, Keiko (Mari Yamamoto). The big question is: how far will she go to achieve both goals? Meanwhile, actress Anna Sawai joins the new season with increased recognition, having recently made history as the first Japanese actress to win a Primetime Emmy for her role in the hit FX series Shogun.
12. Kieko Miura (Mari Yamamoto)

I’m so fascinated by Keiko’s story! She was a brilliant scientist back in the 1950s, working with Bill and Lee, and then she just vanished after falling into this strange rift. It’s crazy to think she was lost in time and didn’t reappear until 2017! Now she’s trying to rebuild her life after missing so much, and we’re getting glimpses of her past – her complicated relationships with Bill, who’s also her husband, and Lee, as they were discovering the Titans and building Monarch into what it is today. It’s heartbreaking to see her deal with everything she’s lost while also remembering those pivotal moments from the 50s.
11. Bill Rada (Anders Holm)

Bill Rada, an explorer who died during an expedition to Skull Island in the 1970s, left behind research that influenced the modern work of Monarch. Now, his wife, Keiko, is grappling with the truth about his death as she returns to the world above. Through flashbacks, we’ll see a younger Bill Rada, played by Anders Holm, traveling with Keiko and Lee to investigate a potential Titan hidden deep in the ocean.
10. Col. Lee Shaw (Wyatt & Kurt Russell)
Wyatt Russell and his father, Kurt Russell, both played the character of Col. Lee Shaw, appearing in different time periods – the 1950s and 2010s, respectively. A surprising reveal in Season 1 showed that Kurt Russell had been portraying the older version of Shaw all along. The story explained that this Shaw had lost twenty years while exploring the Hollow Earth, and then spent decades in Monarch’s care. He was reactivated during the events of Godzilla (2014). In the Season 1 finale, the older Shaw seemingly disappeared while saving his love, Keiko, but Kurt Russell’s return for Season 2 hints that Shaw survived, as he has faced this situation before. Flashbacks will feature Wyatt Russell as the younger Shaw in the 1950s, alongside Keiko and Bill, as they investigate a secluded coastal town that reveres a sea god, which may be more than just a legend. A separate project focusing on young Shaw is also planned within the Monsterverse.
9 & 8. May Olowe-Hewitt (Kiersey Clemons) & Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe)

In the first season, May (played by Kiersey Clemons), also known as Corah Mate, kept her true skills hidden, and for good reason. She was a brilliant computer programmer who had previously worked for Apex Cybernetics, creating the technology that would eventually become Mechagodzilla, as seen in Godzilla vs. Kong. Rey Watabe’s character, Kentaro, mostly assisted his sister Cate in finding their father during the first season. Now, in Season 2, the on-again, off-again relationship between Ken and May continues, but May’s history with Apex is starting to haunt her as events unfold on Skull Island.
7. Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira)

Takehiro Hira, who plays Hiroshi in Shogun, had a smaller role in Season 1 of Monarch. Hiroshi is a skilled scientist working on the portals to Hollow Earth, figuring out how to navigate expeditions to and from this mysterious realm. He managed to bring his mother and daughter back safely, but now the focus shifts to whether he can rescue Lee Shaw. Meanwhile, the Randa family is grappling with old wounds as they come back together.
6 & 5. Tim (Joe Tippett) & Natalia Verdugo (Mirelly Taylor)

Let me tell you about Tim, played by Joe Tippett. He’s a bit of a workhorse for Monarch, constantly sent on assignments like chasing down missing paperwork and keeping an eye on the Randa family. When Season 2 kicks off, a couple of years have passed since Cate, May, and the others were exploring the Hollow Earth, and things at Monarch have really changed. Tim’s boss, Natalia Verdugo (Mirelly Taylor), is now in charge of a much larger operation – and I mean that literally, they’ve seriously upgraded their resources!
4. Brenda Holland (Dominique Tipper)

In Season 1 of Monarch, Brenda Holland (Dominique Tipper) was shrouded in mystery, hinting at a connection to May’s history with Applied Experimental Technologies. The season finale revealed she’s a high-ranking executive at Apex Cybernetics, in charge of the Skull Island research facility, as of 2017. She’s likely to play a more significant role in Season 2 – potentially as an ally or an enemy.
3. Isabel (Amber Midthunder)

Amber Midthunder, known for her role in Prey (2022), will be a new addition to Season 2 of Monarch. She’ll play Isabel, a businesswoman, and while details about her character’s arc are scarce, casting Midthunder suggests she’ll play a significant part in the season.
2. Curtiss Cook – Undisclosed

Curtiss Cook, known for his roles in shows like The Chi, Manifest, and Mayans M.C., will appear in Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Details about his character haven’t been revealed yet.
1. Cliff Curtis – Undisclosed

Cliff Curtis, known for his roles in shows like Fear the Walking Dead and Avatar: Fire & Ash, will appear in Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Details about his character are currently being kept secret.
