Ever since Monster Hunter Wilds came out on PC in February 2025, players have been dealing with significant performance problems, particularly if they have graphics cards with 8GB of VRAM. Capcom plans to release an official fix in December, but the game’s community has already created a surprisingly effective solution that’s even caught the attention of the tech experts at Digital Foundry.
This Mod Fixes Performance Issues
Recent tests show the main problem with Monster Hunter Wilds isn’t how much video memory (VRAM) your graphics card has, but how the game handles textures. The game uses a modern compression technique that’s meant to be handled by the graphics card, similar to DirectStorage. However, the game’s settings incorrectly suggest it’s using the CPU for this task. This mismatch causes small, noticeable stutters when you move the camera quickly, even with powerful cards that have 12GB of VRAM. Lowering the texture settings doesn’t fully fix the issue, as brief dips in performance still occur.
Players created a mod called “MHWS-TEX-Decompressor” (which needs the REFramework tool) to fix stuttering in the game. It works by replacing the game’s compressed textures with uncompressed ones, while saving the originals just in case. This will increase the amount of storage space the game uses – from about 24GB to around 41GB – but testing with an RTX 4060 (8GB VRAM) shows it gets rid of those annoying little stutters. The result is much smoother gameplay, and players can now use the highest texture settings without their graphics card slowing down.
Community Mod Boosts Performance
Digital Foundry commends a clever fix: the game loads textures without compressing them first. This takes the strain off the graphics card, leading to much more consistent performance. Surprisingly, loading more data into the graphics card’s memory actually makes the game run smoother – it’s a worthwhile trade-off between needing more storage space and enjoying a better gaming experience for many players.
As a PC gamer, I’m really impressed with this mod! It shows how awesome our community is at finding fixes and workarounds when the game has performance issues – often even before the developers release an official patch. Right now, it doesn’t work with the super high-res texture pack, but even without that, it gives a big boost to anyone running an 8GB graphics card. It’s a lifesaver!
The positive results with “MHWS-TEX-Decompressor” show that developers need to prioritize better texture decompression when making PC versions of games. Players with fast SSDs can often avoid performance problems by using uncompressed game files, a practice already becoming common in games like God of War Ragnarök and The Last of Us Part 1.
Before Capcom releases an official update, this mod is still one of the best ways to help Monster Hunter Wilds run well on computers that aren’t super high-end.
