The story of Ed Gein might still be a puzzle for many, even those who really enjoy true crime. However, if we talk about movies like Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you might begin to understand the disturbing connection these films share in terms of the crimes they portray.
That’s what Ryan Murphy’s newest Netflix show, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, is all about. This eight-episode series continues Murphy’s streak of popular streaming shows, and also brings Charlie Hunnam back to television.
The British actor, famous for playing a central character in Sons of Anarchy, has confessed that taking on the role was quite daunting for him. In an interview with Variety, he explained: “I delayed starting as much as I could. Once I began reading the script, I became genuinely scared.”
He explained, “To truly play a character, you need a great deal of love and understanding for them. Even though Ed did terrible things, I was determined to find the humanity within him.”
Alongside Hunnam, the cast includes notable actors such as Tom Hollander, Lesley Manville, Addison Rae, and Vicky Krieps, among others. However, since the upcoming Netflix series will explore not only the story of Gein, but also his influence on how stories are told in Hollywood, you might find yourself wondering who plays whom.

Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein

Who is Ed Gein? Ed had a strict upbringing, heavily influenced by his controlling mother. After her death in 1945, he became very reclusive, but kept his mother’s room exactly as it was, almost like a memorial. When Bernice Worden disappeared in 1957, police questioned Ed and were shocked by what they found – his house contained disturbing evidence, and they learned he had been stealing from graves.

Laurie Metcalf as Augusta Gein

Who was Augusta Gein? She was Ed Gein’s mother, a deeply religious woman who relocated the family to a rural farm. This further isolated Ed and his brother from society. Following the passing of her son Henry, she and Ed lived together alone until her death in 1945.

Who is Adeline Watkins? Accounts differ regarding the extent of Adeline and Ed’s relationship, but a 1957 article in the Wisconsin State Journal suggested they almost married and shared a love of books and movies. Later, Watkins disputed these claims, stating the original report “exaggerated the situation and included false information.”

Tom Hollander as Alfred Hitchcock

Her trial in 1947, conducted by a US military court, gained international attention when shocking details of her cruelty – including making lampshades from the skin of prisoners – came to light.
I’ve been wondering, where have I seen Vicky Krieps before? I finally figured it out – she’s the incredibly talented actress from films like Phantom Thread, Bergman Island, Corsage, and Hot Milk. She’s really made a name for herself with those roles!

Evelyn vanished back in 1953 when she was just 14 years old, and it sparked a massive search – around 2000 people were involved, making it one of the largest searches Wisconsin had ever seen. It remains an unsolved mystery, and for a long time, many people suspected Ed Gein was somehow involved.
