Monsterverse’s Winning Formula: Godzilla And King Kong Team-Ups

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters hints at a familiar story approach that has worked well for the Monsterverse franchise. Starting with Godzilla in 2014, Legendary Pictures has been consistently building this universe, adding characters like King Kong in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and introducing other massive creatures – titans – such as Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Godzilla proved himself as the most powerful titan, but his reign was challenged by King Kong in the movie Godzilla vs. Kong. Despite initially fighting each other, they eventually joined forces to defeat Mechagodzilla. This partnership continued in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The Monsterverse expanded to TV in 2023 with the series Monarch, which focuses on a top-secret group researching giant creatures called Titans. The second season will feature King Kong, and the show appears to be successfully following the popular formula established by the Monsterverse films.

The Monsterverse’s Godzilla And King Kong Team Ups Have Been Successful

The idea of Godzilla battling or teaming up with King Kong is undeniably appealing. It’s a spectacle of two huge, famous monsters clashing – or fighting other creatures – with massive destruction all around. This makes for incredibly fun viewing, and movies featuring these clashes have consistently proven popular.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong was a box office success, earning $470.1 million globally. It was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, and both viewers and critics generally liked it, giving it a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I was really excited for The New Empire this year, but critics weren’t as impressed – it only got a 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, it did amazingly well in theaters, bringing in $572 million worldwide and becoming the biggest movie ever in the Monsterverse! It makes total sense to me that the next two projects they’ve announced are team-up movies, given how well The New Empire did.

The Monsterverse’s Next Two Projects Are Both Continuing This Formula

The second season of Monarch arrives on Apple TV on February 27th, and the new trailer introduces a massive new monster emerging from the ocean. This creature appears to be a mix of octopus and shellfish, and is said to be so powerful that it will take both Godzilla and King Kong working together to defeat it.

Godzilla and King Kong will team up again in the upcoming 2027 film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. While the story hasn’t been revealed yet, the title suggests they might face a powerful enemy from outer space – perhaps SpaceGodzilla or another monster from beyond Earth.

The upcoming Monsterverse movies suggest a focus on team-ups between King Kong and Godzilla. Even though this could become a familiar plot, it’s always fun to watch these two titans battle it out on the big screen.
