Mortal Kombat 2’s Most Insulting Death Officially Addressed As Surprising Return Teased

Mortal Kombat II is famous for its exciting and violent fights, and for how it features popular characters like Kitana and Johnny Cage. However, one character had a surprisingly shocking and even disrespectful ending. Recently, the reason for that character’s death was explained, and there’s even a hint that they might come back in the future.

Fans were shocked by the quick and violent death of Cole Young in the latest Mortal Kombat movie, especially since he was the main character in the first film. Writer Jeremy Slater recently explained his decision, admitting he liked the actor Lewis Tan but didn’t feel the character of Cole Young fit well with the rest of the story. He shared in an interview with MovieWeb that he agreed with many fans who felt Cole didn’t quite belong in the Mortal Kombat universe, but also hinted that Cole might reappear in future installments.

It felt jarring, like seeing a random, unimportant character added to a big team-up movie like The Avengers. I’ve been a fan of these characters for decades, and this new person didn’t fit and took attention away from the ones I already cared about. When the 2021 movie came out, I immediately felt like this character didn’t belong in that world, as Slater explained.

Could Cole Return In A Mortal Kombat Sequel?

Slater spoke highly of Lewis Tan’s performance and acknowledged the character had a dedicated fanbase. However, he felt it was the right decision to eliminate the character, allowing the show to concentrate on its more established heroes. Slater expressed hope that Tan will return in a future role, as he’d be thrilled to work with him again.

As a huge fan, I was really interested to hear what the filmmakers were thinking about the sequel. Apparently, they noticed the initial reaction to a certain character wasn’t what they’d hoped for with the core fanbase. They considered moving forward with that approach anyway, but ultimately decided it might be best to refocus and explore ways to bring Lewis Tan’s character back in a way that fans would genuinely love in future films.

Slater praised Lewis Tan’s performance, saying he was fantastic and deserved more screen time in the movie. He also expressed regret over his character killing Tan’s, acknowledging Tan’s popularity with fans and reiterating how much he enjoyed working with him. Slater hopes this isn’t the last we see of Lewis Tan in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

Everyone’s hoping to see Cole Young return, but the producer specifically mentioned Lewis Tan playing a different character, not necessarily Cole. Considering the sequel brought back Kano and Kung Lao in new forms, and anything can happen with resurrections in Mortal Kombat, it’s possible Tan could return as someone else entirely, or even a reimagined Cole. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
