Mortal Kombat 2’s R-Rated Fatalities Are “Worse” Than The Original, Promises Star (Exclusive)

As a fan of the games, I’ve been eagerly awaiting Mortal Kombat 2, and from what I’m hearing, it sounds like it’s going to deliver on the promise of a truly epic tournament. The first film, directed by Simon McQuoid, did a solid job introducing the characters and world, but used a new character, Cole Young, to help audiences get their bearings. Now, with that groundwork laid, actor Lewis Tan tells me the sequel is finally ready to give us the fights we’ve all been waiting for – the ones that truly define Mortal Kombat.

I’m so hyped for the Wildcat sequel! I recently read an exclusive interview with Tan over at egmr.ru, and he gave us some awesome details. He promised the new movie will be a much more intense version of the first one – seriously, even more action-packed! I was really curious about how it earned its R-rating and how it stacks up against the original, and Tan actually answered that question. It sounds like it’s going to be incredible!

I believe this version is more intense. The fights and deaths are harsher, but also much more elaborate and layered – which was exactly what I aimed for. I wanted to make the combat more complex and impactful. After all, it’s Mortal Kombat! Our goal was to create the best fight movie of the year, and I think we succeeded.

Tan Hypes His own Secret Mortal Kombat 2 Battle (& Reveals What it Cost)

Unfortunately, Cole and Sub-Zero won’t be facing off again in Mortal Kombat 2 – a rematch that actor Lewis Tan really hoped for, as he’s close friends with Johannes Taslim (who plays Sub-Zero). However, Tan assures fans he’s involved in an incredibly exciting fight scene in the sequel, and the setting and opponent are particularly memorable.

Tan hints that a particular fight – though he’s keeping the specifics secret – will be a memorable highlight for viewers. He also mentioned the scene was physically demanding to film.

I’m trying to be careful about sharing details of what happened during filming, because people might guess who I was fighting. I definitely ended up with a lot of bruises and was pretty beat up, and you’ll soon find out why. I really enjoy doing my own stunts and all the fight choreography. There was only one major stunt in the second movie that I didn’t do myself – a double backflip with a hard landing. That was just too risky. You’re always going to get a few bumps and bruises when you’re doing fight scenes, but it’s all worth it for the performance.

That sounds particularly promising, and Tan is very clear that the reins are off for the sequel:

The second movie really prioritized action sequences. The first one attempted to balance the story with the fights, but the second one centered around a tournament, which allowed the team to deliver the action fans were eager to see. They gave the action team a lot of creative freedom in how they filmed and edited everything, and that approach really paid off. While the first movie also had good action, it felt like they were juggling too many elements. We took what we learned from that experience and applied it to the second film.
