The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie has had its release date moved up a week. It was originally scheduled for May 15, 2026, but will now arrive in theaters on May 8, 2026. Deadline reports this change, along with a shift for Sheep Detectives, is to accommodate the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The report also shows that early research screenings of Mortal Kombat 2 have received positive feedback.
Originally, Mortal Kombat 2 was planned to hit theaters in October 2025. However, the release date has been moved to May 2026. The delay is reportedly due to the incredibly positive reaction to the movie’s Red Band trailer, which gained over 100 million views on social media worldwide in July.
The filmmakers chose May 2026 for the release of Mortal Kombat 2 because there were fewer competing movies scheduled for that month. The main competitor would have been Final Destination: Bloodlines, along with Is God Is. Releasing in October, however, would have meant going up against films like Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere and Regretting You, creating more competition.
The upcoming film Mortal Kombat 2 picks up where the first movie left off, with Karl Urban taking on the role of Johnny Cage. He’ll be joined by Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Martyn Ford will play the villain Shao Khan.
The first film in this revived series came out in 2021 and was a big success, even with the ongoing pandemic. It earned $23.3 million in the US during its opening weekend, exceeding Warner Bros.’ expectations of around $15 million.
Jeremy Slater, who wrote the screenplay for Mortal Kombat 2, also revealed at New York Comic Con that a third Mortal Kombat movie is now in development with writing already underway.
During the panel, Christian Slater shared that New Line and Warner Bros. are thrilled with the film. They believe there’s a large, eager audience and are so confident in its success that they’ve already asked him to begin working on a sequel.
Although Warner Bros. is currently focused on releasing the second movie, they’re also honoring the history of the Mortal Kombat series with the upcoming release of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection later this month.
