Video game movies are doing really well in theaters, with films like Minecraft, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Sonic the Hedgehog becoming huge successes. While those movies are made for families, Warner Bros. is also joining the trend with a different approach: the Mortal Kombat films. These movies don’t shy away from the violence that made the games popular, earning them an R-rating. So far, two Mortal Kombat movies have been released, and there’s a chance we’ll see more. Fans are also hoping for spin-off films focusing on individual characters, such as Sub-Zero.
Joe Taslim, who plays Sub-Zero, recently told Screen Rant that a solo movie focusing on his character has been discussed. He explained that it’s a possibility, but only if the Mortal Kombat franchise as a whole continues to be successful. While he hasn’t heard anything official, he’s open to the idea if the studio decides to move forward with another film and explore his character’s story further.
What Is the Future of the Mortal Kombat Movie Series?

Following the success of the 2021 Mortal Kombat film – which was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic and earned $84.4 million worldwide – Warner Bros. was optimistic about the sequel. Even before Mortal Kombat II came out, the studio approved a third film, hiring Jeremy Slater to write the screenplay. While a release date wasn’t set, the development of Mortal Kombat 3 showed Warner Bros. was planning a long-term film franchise.
I’m still trying to figure out how well Mortal Kombat II will ultimately do. So far, it’s made about $126.8 million worldwide on an $80 million production budget – though that doesn’t include how much they spent on marketing and getting it into theaters. Critics haven’t been blown away, giving it a score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. Most people seem to agree it’s a good time for fans of the games, but it’s not exactly the action movie of the year. Warner Bros. was probably hoping for bigger numbers, especially since they even delayed the release from October 2025 to May 2026, hoping to make their summer lineup stronger. I get that it’s rated R and that limits who will go see it compared to something like A Minecraft Movie or Super Mario, but plenty of mature action films have been huge hits before.
Don’t expect to hear anything about Mortal Kombat 3 – or a potential spin-off featuring Sub-Zero – until Warner Bros. assesses how well the current film is performing. While a scriptwriter has been hired for Mortal Kombat 3, that doesn’t mean the movie is definitely happening. The studio might cancel it if they don’t think it will be profitable. It’s important to remember that Mortal Kombat II‘s success isn’t just about ticket sales. Warner Bros. will also earn money from people renting or buying the movie digitally and on Blu-ray. How well the film does on those platforms will determine if a third movie gets made.
Don’t expect a Sub-Zero movie anytime soon. Although he’s a fan-favorite character in Mortal Kombat, the recent films haven’t performed well enough at the box office to justify a spinoff. If the Mortal Kombat series proves successful and there’s strong demand for more movies, a Sub-Zero film could happen. However, Warner Bros. is currently focused on securing the future of the main series before considering expanding the universe with individual character stories.
