Update [February 12, 2026, 2:30 AM]: Wildlight Entertainment, the developer of Highguard, has confirmed reports of layoffs. In a statement to Kotaku, the company said it made the “incredibly difficult decision” to let go of some employees.
Several former employees have reported that the majority of the game’s development team has been laid off.
As a fan, I’m really glad to hear that Wildlight is keeping a dedicated team of developers! It sounds like they’re committed to continuing to improve the game and keep it running smoothly, which is awesome.
We’ll be real: it’s not looking good for Highguard.
According to a recent LinkedIn post, game developer Wildlight Entertainment has let go of the majority of its employees after their hero shooter game, Highguard, didn’t perform well after its release.
Highguard was only released a little over two weeks ago, making these reported layoffs happen much sooner than most people expected.
It seems senior level designer Alex Graner was let go today, and he’s shared this information publicly.
Graner expressed disappointment, noting that the cancellation means fans won’t get to see content – including designs he and others created for Highguard – that was never released.
It’s understandably devastating for people like Graner who dedicated themselves to the project, especially since it didn’t quite succeed as hoped.
Highguard was originally announced at the very end of The Game Awards 2025. This timing wasn’t ideal, as anything shown during Geoff Keighley’s annual show faces a lot of hype and scrutiny.
Despite some early excitement, the game Highguard launched as scheduled on January 26th, but quickly lost players – numbers dropped dramatically within just a few days.
Adding the 5v5 mode gave the game a temporary boost in popularity, but it wasn’t a lasting solution.
We expect an official announcement about the Highguard’s plans to be released shortly, and we’ll update this article as soon as it is.
