A highly-rated fantasy role-playing game from the 2000s, and a classic title from Blizzard, has quietly been added to Xbox Game Pass. Players with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Premium subscriptions on both PC and Xbox consoles (including Xbox One and Series X) can now play it. The only players who won’t have access are those with the basic $10-a-month Xbox Game Pass Core subscription, formerly known as Xbox Live Gold.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers on PC and Xbox consoles (those with Premium or Ultimate plans) can now play Diablo 2: Resurrected, a remastered version of the classic Diablo II and its Lord of Destruction expansion from 2001. Microsoft added the game to the service without any prior announcement. This comes as exciting news, as a new expansion for the 26-year-old action RPG is also on the way.
One of the 2000s’ Best Games
Released in 2000 as a follow-up to the original Diablo (1997), Diablo 2 is often hailed as the best game in the series. Many consider it one of the greatest RPGs of the 2000s, and even one of the best video games ever made. It received a score of 88 on Metacritic upon release, which was quite positive, though some believe the game deserved even higher praise.
Best Time Since 2021 to Play It
With a brand new expansion announced – the first in over 20 years! – I think now is the perfect time to finally jump into Diablo 2 if you’ve never played it, or to revisit it if you’re feeling nostalgic. As a Diablo fan, I’m even thinking of taking a break from Diablo 4 and going back to the classic. Let’s be real, Diablo 4 didn’t quite hit the mark for everyone, and the support since launch hasn’t been amazing. If you’re curious about the Diablo 2 remaster itself, though, we’ve got a full review where we break down everything it does well, and where it falls a little short.
We don’t know how long Diablo 2: Resurrected will be available on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft typically doesn’t share this information, and that’s true this time as well. Because it’s an Activision Blizzard game – and therefore an Xbox game – it’s possible it could be added to Game Pass permanently.
So, that’s my take on things! I’d love to hear what you think, though – definitely leave a comment and let me know your thoughts, or head over to the ComicBook Forum to chat with other fans!
